Shortening of the school day is a topic that has been discussed recently within legislative bodies, due at least in part to growing financial concerns. However, there are advantages and disadvantages associated with shortening the school day that should be considered before sweeping action is taken to alter the traditional school day. The financial savings for the district and more time for productive activities after school are two major advantages. However, those advantages might be offset by a reduction in instructional time and the possibility of attending school more days of the year. Disadvantage -- Potential for Extended Year Some states have a per year instructional hour requirement. If the school day were shortened, depending upon current hours, that might put the school in danger of falling short of the number of required instructional hours that a student attends class within a school year. For example, in Michigan, schools must schedule at least 1,098 hours of instruction. If the school day were shortened, the system might have to reduce the number of vacation days or add days at the beginning or end of the school year in order to be in compliance with the hours requirement. Disadvantage -- Reduced Instructional Time A shortened school day would reduce the amount of instructional time. Advantage -- Opportunities for Extracurricular Education Reducing the number of hours spent in class each day would allow extra time in the afternoons for students to participate in additional educational or vocational experiences. Students would have more time for an after-school job that might net them spending money or provide supplemental income to lower income families. Students might also have the opportunity to participate in internships, perform community service, take advanced classes or investigate another activity that might broaden their intellectual horizons.
