Many people interested in music think that drums are not easy to master.

So how hard is it to learn drums?

It can be challenging, but if you practice consistently, you will learn the basics shortly and play along with music already after six months. However, if you want to play on the stage, it will require a few years of effort and patience. Let’s find out how hard it is to learn drums and how challenging it is compared to other instruments.

The challenge of learning drums

The most challenging part of learning the drums is the coordination required to play multiple rhythms at once. Both of your hands and feet have to play something different simultaneously. That is why it’s important for drummers to know how to count music. You’ll need to be able to keep track of which rhythm you’re playing at any given moment and work out which ones you need to change next. Once you’ve mastered the basics of counting, you can start playing basic beats on your drums. These will use either just your hands or just your feet, but they build up a lot of the skills you need in order to get more complicated as soon as possible. The difficulty of learning drums is mainly determined by the amount of time and effort you’re willing to put into it. If you wish to become a professional drummer and play in a band or other musical ensemble, your task will be much more challenging. But, if you don’t have big goals with drumming, learning the basics will not be so hard.

How long will it take to learn drums?

For basic things such as holding the drumsticks keeping the simple rhythm, you will need about 30 minutes. However, after six months of consistent practice (approximately five times a week,) you may be ready to play along with the music.

If you aim for the stage, it might take a bit longer.

You will need at least three years to learn how to play drums very well and perform live with a band.

Drums vs other instruments

You might think it’s a lot easier to learn how to play the drums than, let’s say… guitar. However, drums are by far one of the most difficult instruments to learn. The learning process is the same with any instrument. There is a definite learning curve, and like anything worth learning, it will take time, patience and practice. With drums, however, there is added complexity because of the nature of the instrument. Drums have many pieces that provide a variety of sounds and need to be played at the same time. Besides the technique, you also need to work on your stamina and strength to be able to play properly. Drumming requires great coordination and physical effort, so it might be more challenging than playing any other instrument.

Conclusion

Drumming can be difficult to master, and you might need a few years of practice to get good. Out of all of the instruments, drums may be one of the hardest to learn. The reason is you have to use both hands and both feet to do different things at the same time.

That requires good coordination skills and physical effort.

Learning to play the drums can be frustrating and time consuming, but as long as you try hard don’t give up, you will succeed!
