He had his detractors — including city fire officials who told him in 1986 that he couldn't chain and padlock the school's doors to keep "hoodlums and thugs" out of the building, because it threatened the safety of the students and staff. "He was solemn and stern and he loved order," Gaines said.

Read More »Joe Clark, the legendary former principal of Eastside High School who inspired love and induced controversy, was remembered this week by former students, teachers, city officials and residents as a stern man who nonetheless took interest in every student and left an indelible mark on their lives. "They called him 'Crazy Joe,' but we called him our hero," said Della McCall-Fischer, a former Eastside student who now serves as Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh's chief of staff. "That's what he was to me. A hero." Clark, 82, died Tuesday at his home in Florida following a long illness. But his six-year stint as Eastside's principal — which led to a Time magazine cover, a meeting with the Reagan administration and the famous Morgan Freeman movie "Lean On Me" — helped raise the bar at one of the city's most troubled schools. Democratic Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly said Clark belonged to the pantheon of larger-than-life figures who dominated Paterson in the 1980s, including the late Mayor Frank Graves and former schools superintendent Frank Napier. Wimberly, hired to teach special education at Eastside in 1989, said Clark made a lasting impression on his pupils, many of whom remember him fondly decades later. "There is nothing but love for this guy — you don't hear bad stories from students," Wimberly said. "From staff, you may get a different story. He was a little heavy-handed, a little over the top sometimes. But I have yet to meet a student who ever said anything bad about Joe Clark."

"He was solemn and stern and he loved order," Gaines said. "But he was a very compassionate and caring individual when it came to the social and spiritual development of the students." Paterson:Two days before Christmas, two Paterson families begin new lives in 4th Ward Habitat homes Others, like Paterson Board of Education President Ken Simmons, remember the little things Clark taught them, such as always walking to the right in hallways. "He came in and created order out of chaos," Simmons said. "[Now] no matter where I am I’m always walking to the right. If I’m in the mall, I’m walking to the right.” Cheryl Coy, the city's assistant superintendent and a 1989 Eastside graduate, said Clark "left a lasting footprint in the pathway of every student he touched." “We never feared Mr. Clark," she said. "We were more afraid of letting him down.” Mayor Andre Sayegh said he was too young to have Clark as principal. But he's spoken to former students who said they felt Clark was an advocate for them at a time few others were. "To many, he was a father figure," Sayegh said. "He spoke strongly and carried a big stick." Sayegh did meet Clark briefly as a teenager in 1992 when the future mayor went to an anti-violence forum in Secaucus where Clark spoke. "I approached him and said, 'Mr. Clark, I admire and respect you.' He shook my hand and said, 'Son, what are you doing with yourself?' I said, 'My plan is to go to college.' And he said, 'That's the right answer.'"
