Pianos are meant to move air, and they sound a lot better with the lids up, (if the hammers are in good shape). I personally think if a pianist has a grand piano, it should be voiced and regulated so that it can be played without restraint, with at least a partially open lid.

If one is holding back while they play, something about the piano is not working FOR them and they are missing the freedom to express themselves. It is too common to find a customer that keeps the piano closed up because it is "too loud" with the lid up. Invariably, the hammers are hard and lacking any tonal palette, waiting only for the voicing acupuncture's sting to banish the shrill characters that lurk anywhere from mf upwards..... That's a really good way to look at it Ed. I know of a piano teacher who voices her pianos a little too bright for my taste and isn't a fan of opening the lid. Your opinion matches my assessment of her instruments and what I think she should do, namely that she should just open her lids and get louder fuller sound instantly and naturally.
