OK, so perhaps you were afraid of Captain Hook from Peter Pan when you were about 6 or maybe even Captain Barbossa who torments Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean saga, but most of us have since been charmed by fictitious portrayals of the pirates of the Golden Age, overshadowing the terrifying reality of piracy.

So lets take a brief look at history’s 5 most terrifying pirates:

5. Black Bart (Bartholomew Roberts)

Black Bart is one of the most terrifying pirates from history. Having started his pirate career rather unwittingly, after a slave ship he was working on was captured by pirates, Black Bart was particularly terrifying to captains and officers who mistreated their crew. He never forgot his humble beginnings working as an underdog and was legendary for asking captured crew members about how well they had been treated by their superiors. If there was evidence of mistreatment, Black Bart was famed for slicing and dicing the offenders in front of their victims. A little torture to instill good behavior!

4. Edward Teach (Blackbeard)

Blackbeard was perhaps the most terrifying and feared pirates of all time, although it seems that most of his fame came from theatrical tricks, preferring not to engage in close combat. This Englishman made himself look terrifying by boarding enemy ships in a cloud of smoke with fuses burning in his beard and bearing multiple firearms and daggers across his chest. A little marketing strategy also helped his reputation, with rumors that he dabbled in voodoo and black arts. Certainly one of the most terrifying pirates in history.

3. Zheng Yi Sao

One of China’s most successful and terrifying pirates was indeed a woman. Once a prostitute, Zheng Yi Sao married a pirate captain and took over his command upon his death. She was famous for her business savvy negotiations and love of decapitation being one of the few pirates in history to have made it to a successful retirement (at the age of 35!), becoming both a mother and grandmother. During her time as a pirate captain, she kept a tight ship and strict pirate code thanks to the threat of having your head cut off and thrown into the ocean.

Francois l’Olonnais was a French pirate famed for showing his hatred for the Spanish by eating the pumping heart of a Spanish rival in order to get directions and beheading the whole crew of a Spanish ship that he captured bar one man whom he sent with a message: “I shall never henceforward give quarter to any Spaniard whatsoever.” His eat-your-heart out tactics was a ploy to terrorize Spanish prisoners into telling him the best route to take to avoid his Spanish adversaries. Legend has it that he met his own fate in the stomach of cannibals.

1. Edward “Ned” Lowe

Ned Lowe was an English criminal come sailor turned pirate of the eighteenth century who is easily among history’s most terrifying pirates. He was a pretty successful pirate but also very ruthless and cruel towards his prisoners. Although he tried to avoid engaging in battle, he was renowned for tortuous details that would fuel his notorious reputation. For example, for pure amusement he set alight a ship that he no longer needed with the cook still aboard saying that he was a “greasy fellow” and cut off the lips of the captain of a captured ship who had thrown the gold overboard. He then cooked the captain’s lips and fed them back to him before massacring the entire crew. Nice!
