1. Write a complaint to file with the federal district court in the defendant's location. Provide the names of the parties involved. This would be you and the defendant. Indicate the legal basis for the court to hear this particular case by citing the copyright law. 2. Describe your legal claim by explaining how the defendant infringed upon your copyright ownership by using copyrighted music without your permission. Explain the basis for this legal claim with the presence of sufficient evidence indicating your copyright ownership. Note that the defendant had reasonable access to the music and there is substantial similarity between the music used by the defendant and the copyrighted music. 3. Ask the court to take action against the defendant and list your request in the demand for judgment or plea for relief section of the complaint. Requests for actions include monetary compensation for the damages caused by the infringement of copyright ownership. 4. File the complaint with the federal district court clerk to commence the civil lawsuit. Fill out the summons form at the court clerk's office by indicting the name of the defendant and his addresses. Receive the summons from the court clerk.
