1. The ukulele is easy

The ukulele is one of the easiest instruments to learn how to play. It is much easier than the similarly shaped guitar, the piano, violin, or any wind instrument! The ukulele has only four strings, rather than the guitar’s six strings. Since most people only have five fingers per hand, four strings are much easier to manage than six. Chords are easier on the ukulele than guitar. Aside from the advantage of four strings, the ukulele is tuned differently than a guitar. The unique tuning makes chords much easier to finger.

2. The ukulele is affordable

Ukuleles are much less expensive than guitars. A decent starter ukulele can be had for $40-$50. Of course, a concert grade ukulele can cost in the thousands.

3. The ukulele doesn’t hurt your fingers

The strings on a ukulele are typically made from nylon, which is much easier on the fingers then the usual metal strings of a guitar.

4. The ukulele is small

5. The ukulele is versatile

One can play almost any genre of music on the ukulele. It works well with rock, pop, jazz, and even classical music.

6. Playing the ukulele reduces stress

The soft pleasant sound of a ukulele can be quite comforting and assist in relieving stress and soothing the soul. It usually makes you imagine you are in Hawaii.

Are a lot of piano tuners blind?

Today our society has a different attitude towards disability and with the help of modern computer technology the blind are much less limited in their choice of occupation, so while I still know of several blind piano tuners, it isn't the case nowadays that the majority of piano tuners are blind.

Why do people think piano tuners are blind? A question I often ask myself when I’m out and about in Sheffield, Doncaster or Rotherham. After the First World War many men returned home blinded by mustard gas. Many retrained in piano tuning as a way to make an honest living. In those days pianos were much more commonplace – most front rooms possessed a parlour piano in the way most living rooms today contain a television or computer, so piano tuners were high in demand. Even in more recent times the blind were encouraged to learn piano tuning from a young age because, sadly, their parents and teachers didn’t think they were able to do much else. The thinking was that their hearing would be more acute to make up for their lack of sight. Today our society has a different attitude towards disability and with the help of modern computer technology the blind are much less limited in their choice of occupation, so while I still know of several blind piano tuners, it isn’t the case nowadays that the majority of piano tuners are blind.

– Richard, Piano Tuner Sheffield.
