The 8 Most Common Places That People Misplace Their Keys

There are fewer things more annoying than misplacing keys. It always seems to happen at the worst possible time, like when you’re running late for work or it’s freezing outside, with the frantic search for the lost keys being one of the stressful things we experience in life. Thankfully, most of us find our misplaced keys as they are usually left somewhere obvious, typically hiding in plain sight. In fact, it’s so common to misplace keys that there is a good chance you’ll find them in any of the following places:

Drawers

Many people use drawers to get rid of clutter, meaning many people accidently place their keys in their drawers, especially when cleaning up a surface like a table or countertop. So, if you can’t find your keys be sure to search through your drawers in case it was accidently placed in there with other items – it’s usually hiding beneath something!

Countertops

Kitchen countertops are another common place people misplace their keys. This often happens when coming in from work or grocery shopping, where you’re carrying loads of things so just dump the keys down on the counter to free up your hands. Cluttered countertops often hide keys in plain sight – make sure you look here!

In the Door or Ignition

Many people completely forget to remove their keys from the lock after opening their car or front door. This is one of the riskier places to misplace them as you never know who might notice the keys, so it should be one of the first places to check. Check the ignition too, as many people leave their car key here and never think to check it.

Pockets

Always check your pockets when looking for keys! So many people think they’ve lost their keys only to discover they’ve been in their pocket the entire time. If this doesn’t work be sure to check the pockets of any laundry and clothes you’ve recently worn like jackets, pants, shorts, hoodies etc.

Backpack or Purse

It’s easy to misplace keys in a backpack or purse that is full of other stuff, as sometimes they’re tucked into a corner or hidden behind something. Empty your bag or purse out just to make sure, checking all extra compartments!

Sofa

Keys often fall out of pockets when sitting on the sofa and you may not notice because they fall behind a cushion or down the sides. A quick skim around the sides and picking up the cushions should reveal whether the keys are there.

Washer/Dryer

Sometimes people forget to remove their keys from their pants before washing them, so consider checking your laundry basket or the washer/dryer. The keys may even get sucked into the filters due its size.

Trash

It is the last place you want to have misplaced keys but there is a good chance you’ve accidently thrown them in the trash. It’s easy to do when removing clutter and cleaning around your home, so you may need to rummage through your trash to find the keys!
