Music can mean different things to different people and individual songs can impact different people in different ways. Perhaps the greatest thing about music is that it allows for individuality. There is a genre out there for everyone and musical tastes definitely vary. Whether you like rock, pop, country, classical or any other genre, it’s a fact that there are some songs on which the general music-loving population seems to agree; They just totally rock!

Let’s set the scene. It’s around 1 am and you’re hanging out at your local watering hole with a bunch of your buddies. Suddenly, a song comes on the jukebox. Almost as if involuntarily, your toes start tapping. Your head start bopping and, before your know it, you are singing at the top of your lungs along with the chorus. Don’t be shy about it because, as you look around, the rest of the place is singing along with you as well. It’s amazing that a song can have this same exact power over an entire group of musically diverse and individualized people, isn’t it?

With that in mind, Fan Fest News decided to take a look at which songs are most likely to initiate a spontaneous crowd sing-a-long. Let’s take a look at the top 10 and, we dare you not to sing along as we go through the list:

10. Lynyrd Skynyrd – Sweet Home Alabama

A Southern anthem that became everybody’s anthem, Sweet Home Alabama was released in 1974 and has been rockin’ stadiums, bars and parties ever since. Immediately recognizable from the first few notes, this song is certainly a crowd-rouser and sing-a-long staple!

9. Backstreet Boys – I Want It That Way

This song was originally in the “honorable mentions” list below but, after attending my cousin’s wedding this weekend, it got a promotion. There was not a single person in that hall that wasn’t singing along with the Backstreet Boys (or any of the songs that were played during the boy band medley). Tell me whyyyy this song is so catchy!

8. Idina Menzel – Let It Go

As part of social experiment (or, really, just for fun and to see what would happen), I actually played this song on the jukebox in my local Cheers type bar. The song begins to play and, folks kind of look around, slightly confused at first. By the time the first chorus kicked in, it’s the most bizarre and fun scene you can imagine; a bar full of adults, drinks raised in the air, singing along with Idina Menzel with big ol’ smiles on their faces. I dare you to try it at your favorite hang out!

7. Def Leppard – Pour Some Sugar on Me

With just the right amount of rock and sexiness, Pour Some Sugar on Me is a sure thing when it comes to crowd participation. Def Leppard never disappoints when you’re looking for a kick ass song to rock out to and sing along with!

6. Neil Diamond – Sweet Caroline

This song has become a stadium anthem thanks to the Boston Red Sox and, as a Yankee fan, it’s a rare moment for me to give them props for anything. The super singable and upbeat chorus to Sweet Caroline never felt so good. (So good! So good! So good!!)

5. Meatloaf – Paradise by the Dashboard Light

I challenge you to play this song anywhere, anywhere at all, and not have at least one couple role play out the entire song. Paradise by the Dashboard Light is arguably Meatloaf’s most well known tune and is pretty much a guarantee draw for bringing folks out onto the dance floor who are ready to sing along.

4. Bon Jovi – Livin’ on a Prayer

Everyone knows that Tommy used to work on the docks and that Gina works the diner all day. You know how they know that? Because this song has to be one of the most played songs ever. There is rarely an event or night out that comes and goes without Livin’ on a Prayer being played and the DJ’s signature move of lowering the volume right as you get to the chorus to reveal the entire room singing as loudly as possible! Oooooooh! We’re half way there!

3. Garth Brooks – Friends in Low Places

Another song that is recognizable immediately, from the first few guitar notes, Friends in Low Places earns the bronze medal on our list. Country fan or not, you have to agree that Garth Brooks’ legendary tune always gets the entire place swaying and singing with a little bit of that country music twang thrown in.

2. Billy Joel – Piano Man

The silver medal goes to a song that not only gets crowds to sing a long but, essentially demands you to raise your glasses and sway along with the sweet sound of Billy Joel. Piano Man is a classic on the pub playlist (as is basically any song by Joel) and, when played, almost transports the crowd into the imagery about which Joel is singing. Sing us a song, Billy! You’re the Piano Man! And we are singing with you!

Because, regardless of where you are from, everyone relates to that small town girl or city boy. The gold medal for the most likely song to initiate a spontaneous crowd sing-a-long, without a doubt, goes to Don’t Stop Believin’. When played, this song sort of puts crowds into a trance and while we are all on that midnight train going anywhere, suddenly, everyone is hitting that high note and rockin’ out to this infectious tune!

And there you have it! Did your favorite tune make our list?

It was tough to pick a top 10 so, we have some Honorable Mentions below (in no particular order). Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody Carly Rae Jepson – Call Me Maybe AC/DC – Shook Me All Night Long Miley Cyrus – Party in the USA Backstreet Boys – I Want It That Way Guns n Roses – Sweet Child O’ Mine Additionally, there were many other songs that I received as suggestions which didn’t make cut. To honor all of the singable songs, I decided to make a playlist on Spotify of all the suggestions I received. You can follow my playlist on Spotify below or by clicking HERE. Rock on!
