So I just talked about how important it is to memorize music as a beginner pianist, but sight reading is important too. As you learn new music you’ll be presented with this task over and over again. Having the skills to identify rhythms, notes, and key signatures will make the process of learning this music even faster. If you don’t have good sight reading skills then you’ll find yourself really stuck in the music trying to figure things out at a snails pace. I like to take a brand new piece of music or set of measures and read over them a couple of times per week. I do this for maybe 5 to 10 minutes just to keep my sight reading skills sharp.
