Contrary to popular opinion, self-affirmation can inspire you, but only if you have high self-esteem. A 2009 study found that present-tense positive affirmations boosted high self-esteem but lowered poor self-esteem. The researchers discovered that those with poor self-esteem who uttered present-tense positive affirmations (“I am...”) felt worse than people who made positive comments but were also permitted to evaluate how wrong they might be. So, if you have poor self-esteem, reminding yourself how awesome you are won't help since you don't believe it.
