Average IQ by Country

IQ, or the Intelligence Quotient, is a means by which we can measure the cognitive capabilities of any individual. Although theoretically there is no upper limit, IQ is measured on a scale from 0 to 200. It is determined through a series of standardized tests that assess the individual’s critical thinking and ability to identify patterns and sequences. The higher someone’s IQ is, the more intelligent they are considered to be. IQ scores are generally reflective of the overall well-being of a country. Indeed, the average IQ of a population is closely related to a variety of factors such as the quality of education available in the country, the quality of the healthcare system, the quality of the environment and nutrition, and the general quality of the political and economic systems. Therefore, countries with better levels of education, reliable and accessible healthcare, as well as a clean environment have higher IQ scores. Almost all countries are measuring the average IQ of their population: over the years, it has become a useful tool to compare a nation’s population’s cognitive capabilities to another. One can note that Japan is considered to have the highest IQ in the world, while countries like Nepal, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guatemala have lower IQ scores, ranging from 42.99 to 47.72.

IQ Scale

A person’s IQ is calculated by a series of standardized tests that measure their intelligence quotient on a scale that generally ranges from below 40 to 180 and above. A score of 70 or below is considered to be extremely low, and most of the time these individuals experience mental disabilities. A very small percentage of the population has a score below 70. From 70 to 89, IQ scores are considered to be a low average, without necessarily experiencing cognitive impairment. 90 to 110 is average, and most of the population’s IQ scores are within this IQ range. 111 to 120 and 121 to 130 are respectively considered to be high average and superior IQ scores. Finally, a score of 130 or above is considered to be significantly superior, and although quite rare, people with this score are considered gifted. Based on this scale, countries with an average IQ score below the mean (i.e. 90 to 110), are considered to be below average.

Average IQ in USA

The average IQ in the United States is 97.43, which puts it within the top 30 countries in the world with some of the highest average IQs. This average has remained relatively consistent over the past century. Although intelligence can vary greatly between individuals, about 68% of the population in the U.S. has an IQ between 85 to 115. It’s also important to note that average IQ scores vary from state to state, with states like Massachusetts and New Jersey holding higher average than those of Louisiana or Mississippi. It appears that there are regional trends within the U.S. with states in the north-eastern, north, and nort-western regions of the United States tending to have higher average IQs. In contrast, southern states such as Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, New Mexico, and Louisiana all have lower average scores. All of which are ranking in the bottom ten of lowest average IQ scores by state.

Currently, the country with the highest average IQ in the world is Japan (106.5) ranking first, with Singapore, ranking second, Taiwan, ranking third, and Hong Kong, ranking fourth. China and South Korea also have some of the highest IQ scores in the world, China coming in fifth and South Korea sixth. These five East-Asian nations are all very wealthy countries with developed economies and prominent urban centers. They also have a very strong education system and a culture of self-improvement that allows them to score so well. European countries like Belarus, ranking seventh, Finland, ranking eighth, Liechtenstein, ranking ninth, and Germany, ranking tenth, also have some of the highest average IQs in the world.

Countries with Lowest IQ

The countries with the lowest average IQ have a number of factors in common that contribute to an overall low average IQ. Many of the nations have recently experienced significant population growth, leaving governments struggling to allocate limited resources to an ever-enlarging population. Some of these nations include Guinea, which ranks seventh, Liberia, which ranks second, and South Sudan, ranking tenth. Another reason for the low average IQ is overall development levels, as nations within the top ten countries with the lowest average IQ are also among those which are ranked as some of the most underdeveloped nations in the world, with Sierra Leone, which ranks third, for instance, being both in the top ten most underdeveloped countries and also in the top ten countries with the lowest average IQ. Other reasons for low average IQs is political instability, as this affects the development of solid educational systems that greatly helps improve IQ levels. Nations like Nepal, which has the lowest average IQ level in the world, Guatemala, ranking fourth, The Gambia, ranking fifth, Nicaragua, ranking sixth, Ghana, ranking eighth, and Ivory Coast, which ranks ninth, have all experienced political turmoil in recent decades.
