It’s natural when you are first learning the piano to want to play simple songs that people will know. But, you also want to play songs that mean something to you. And, if you come from a Christian family, that will mean learning some worship songs. But are there easy worship songs to play on piano?

I suppose we ought to define worship first because it can mean different things to different people. And worship music is often delivered in different ways.

Something to Consider

Food for thought – there are 2.5 billion Christians in the world. The Center of the Study of Christianity tells us there are over 41,000 Christian denominations and organizations. A quite staggering number. Many of them worship in their own way, of course, and I am not getting into the rights or wrongs of that. But, they all have as their central theme the man from Nazareth. And there are some things that they all agree on. They all like to worship, and they like to sing about it. So, let’s just ignore differences and find some easy worship songs for beginners on the piano. Some might sound a bit difficult, but I am only going to choose songs with easy chord patterns and changes.

Only the simple stuff…

So, you won’t find Cat Stevens and “Morning Has Broken” on here with its piano part by Rick Wakeman. For those piano players that stick with it, that will come a bit later. Some of these easy worship songs to play on piano are solo pieces. Others, you can just play along with what is going on. So, let’s cover just about every angle of Christian worship, and see what easy to play piano parts there are.

The man who wrote it, Charles Tindley, was an African-American pastor from Philadelphia, and the son of a slave, hence the association with the Civil Rights Movement. Pete Seeger sang it to Martin Luther King, and it became their anthem from there on out.

Let’s close this list of easy worship songs for the piano with this timeless track from The Impressions. This song, with its heavy gospel feel, was written by the great Curtis Mayfield. It was taken from the album People Get Ready and released in 1965 as a single.

Another Civil Rights Anthem

In many ways, it had a similar reaction by people to Pete Seeger’s “We Shall Overcome.” Both were songs with a religious theme, and both were used as anthems for the Civil Rights movement. It was The Impressions best-known hit record reaching 14 on the Billboard chart in America. In many ways, it set a pattern for Mayfield. His growing disillusionment with social and political injustice overshadowed what was a simple, gospel-inspired message. Nevertheless, it is a good gospel song with a good message that is easy enough to play. Once again, just four chords: C, Am, F, and Em.

The notes for the chords are:

C chord – C, E, and G.

Am chord – A, C, and E.

It is just that those themes are expressed in different ways. However, they all are easy songs to learn and will help the beginner piano player.
