INTRODUCTION

One thing that struck me while arranging the songs in this book—although it really shouldn’t have been all that surprising—is the amazing melodies found in each of these 12 songs. Of course, the lyrical con– tent, with wonderful themes of worship, praise, sacrifice, and devotion, is second to none, but the melodies are truly what make these dozen songs some of the greatest to ever be written. In fact, “Amazing Grace” often sits atop any “Greatest Songs of All Time” list. And you won’t get any argument from me. While every song is equal parts melody, harmony (chords), rhythm, and lyrics, without a strong melody, the other three components tend to fall flat; it’s the melody that carries the song and has the greatest influence on whether a song is average, good, or great. The melody is the part of the song that any– body—whether they know the lyrics or not—can latch onto and remember. And a truly outstanding mel– ody is what can make a song timeless—an adjective that perfectly describes this collection of hymns and gospels. Think about it: some of these songs date back several hundreds of years, yet we’re still singing them in church, and secular artists like Alan Jackson and Carrie Underwood have released gospel albums featuring many of them. How many songs written in 2021 will still be sung—or even re– membered—in 100, 200, 300 years? Maybe a few. If they have a great melody, their chances increase

exponentially.

Great melodies also have a way of influencing other great melodies. Last year, Troy Nelson Music released a series of Christmas songbooks (12 Easy Christmas Songs for Solo Guitar and 16 Easy Christmas Songs for Fingerpicking Guitar, among others), so I had Christmas melodies (“O Come All Ye Faithful,” “The First Noel,” “Away in a Manger,” etc.) fresh in my head, and I couldn’t help but notice the similarities between some of the hymn melodies and some of those timeless Christmas carols. Coincidence? Maybe. Great writers borrowing from other great writers? Probably. And we’re still experiencing the influence of these great hymn melodies today. If you’re familiar with Florida Georgia Line’s song “H.O.L.Y.” from 2016, a smash hit that reach #1 in several countries and sold over six million copies, then you may have noticed some similarities in that song’s chorus and the hymn “Holy, Holy, Holy.” Was it intentional? Who knows? But the hymn certainly had an influence, whether it was conscious or subconscious, on that country hit. It’s the enduring nature of a great melody that results in a country duo being influenced by a religious hymn that was written 200 years prior.

AMAZING GRACE

KEY: G CHORDS: G, C, Em, and D TIP: For the sake of finger efficiency, you can substitute the G chord below for the standard G chord voicing shown in the chord frames above the staff. This alternate G chord involves fretting the notes on strings 6 and 5 with your ring and middle fingers, respectively, and the high G note on string 1 with your pinky. Essentially, this chord mimics the C chord voicing, which enables you to switch between G and C with minimal frethand shifting. Give it a try.

What are the 7 books removed from the Bible called?

A: The seven books are 1 and 2 Maccabees, Tobit, Judith, Sirach, Wisdom and Baruch. In addition, the Books of Daniel and Esther are slightly longer in Bibles used by members of the Roman Catholic, Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Churches.

Q: I have heard that there are seven Old Testament books that are not found in Protestant Bibles. The Second Book of Maccabees is the only one that I can name. What are the other six?

A: The seven books are 1 and 2 Maccabees, Tobit, Judith, Sirach, Wisdom and Baruch. In addition, the Books of Daniel and Esther are slightly longer in Bibles used by members of the Roman Catholic, Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Why? Up until the 16th century, most Christians accepted the older Alexandrian canon (list of inspired books). When he translated the Bible into German, Martin Luther decided to follow the newer Palestinian canon, which includes only books originally composed in Hebrew or for which a Hebrew text was available in the late first century A.D. The King James version follows Luther on this matter. After the Jerusalem Temple was destroyed, rabbinic Judaism as we know it took shape; the rabbis accepted as inspired only books written in Hebrew. The Alexandrian canon contains seven books written in Greek and parts of two others. Some Protestant Bibles print these seven books under the heading “Apocrypha,” not recognizing them as inspired in the same sense as the other Old Testament books. Only in 1546, at the Council of Trent, did the Catholic Church decree that the longer list must be accepted and used.
