Ctrl+D

Alternatively written as Control+D, ^d, and C-d, Ctrl+D is a keyboard shortcut that varies depending on the program. For example, in most Internet browsers, it is used to add the current site to a bookmark or favorite. But, other programs, like Microsoft PowerPoint, use it to duplicate objects.

How to use the Ctrl+D keyboard shortcut

To use this keyboard shortcut, press and hold either Ctrl key, and while continuing to hold, press D .

Ctrl+D in Excel and Google Sheets

In Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets, pressing Ctrl + D fills and overwrites a cell(s) with the contents of the cell above it in a column. To fill the entire column with the contents of the upper cell, press Ctrl + Shift + Down to select all cells below, and then press Ctrl + D . Tip Using the Ctrl + R shortcut will fill a row cell(s) instead of a column.

Ctrl+D in Microsoft PowerPoint

In Microsoft PowerPoint, Ctrl + D inserts a duplicate of the selected slide. Select the desired slide in the thumbnail pane on the left side of the PowerPoint program window, then press Ctrl + D . This keyboard shortcut may also be used to duplicate objects like shapes.

Ctrl+D in Microsoft Word

In Microsoft Word, pressing Ctrl + D opens the font preferences window.

Ctrl+D in the Linux shell

In the Linux command-line shell, pressing Ctrl + D logs out of the interface. If you used the sudo command to execute commands as another user, pressing Ctrl + D exits out of that other user and puts you back as the user you originally logged into.

What happens when you press Fn and F5?

Fn + (F2)

Turns on and off the speakers or the headphones.

Fn + / (F3/F4)

To decrease the volume, press the Fn+F3 keys.

To increase the volume, press the Fn+F4 keys.

Fn + / (F5/F6)

Press the button repeatedly to adjust the LCD brightness of your computer screen. See Changing the LCD Brightness for more information.

To decrease lighting intensity, press the Fn+F5 keys.

Fn + (F7)

Switches the display output to an external display.

Fn + 1

Fn + Pg Up (Page Up)

Goes to the previous page.

Fn + End (End)

Moves the cursor to the end of a line or page.

Fn + Pg Dn (Page Down)

Goes to the next page.

Fn + Home (Home)

Moves the cursor to the top of a line or page.
