With the world celebrating World Music Day on June 21, it is only fair that we look at how music has been evolving over the years. While most music is still created with traditional music equipment, some pioneers are working to create new sounds and give listeners new musical experiences. Here’s a look at 10 of the most unusual musical instruments that might become the next big thing.

10 Hang

Created by Felix Rohner and Sabina Scharer in Switzerland under their company name PANArt Hangbau AG in 2000, Hang is created with two half-shells of deep drawn nitride steel sheets glued together. Hang was created after a lot of research on an instrument called steelpan and some other instruments. It looks like a warrior’s shield from the Middle Ages and is played with bare hands like on a table.

9 Washboard

While the washboard was originally designed to wash clothes with hands, washing machines have turned the original washboard into a musical instrument. The sounds from the washboard may not be as refined as that from a Hang but it does show how creative minds can come together and save an invention from becoming redundant by turning it into something else altogether.

8 Guitar machine

Eric Royer designed and built the guitar machine in 1994. Since then, the instrument has undergone three changes to make it more portable and enhance the music emanating from it. The mechanical instrument allows Royer to play with his feet so that his hands are free to play any accompanying instrument. This makes him a literal one-man band as you can see in the video.

7 Gravikord

Gravikord is a 54-inch long instrument that has a welded stainless steel frame and a wood-tuning block accompanied by a guitar-like tuning machine. It was invented and built by Bob Grawi in 1986, and has been developed from the Kora, a West Africa instrument as well as the kalimba. The instrument has found appreciation from the Metropolitan Musuem of Art, and is on its way to further fame.

6 Array Mbira

A re-imagination of the African instrument Mbira, Array Mbira is one of the weirdest looking but sweetest sounding instrument on this list. Invented by Bill Wesley, the music is created by manually pushing down and releasing bent high carbon steel tines with the use of skilled fingers to create music. It has apparently been used by the likes of Sting, Imogen Heap and Zakir Hussain to name a few musicians.

You wouldn’t believe it when you hear the Harry Potter theme song in the video above but the glass harmonica is known for creating such spellbinding music. The musical instrument uses glass bowls of different shapes and sizes to create music through friction in a broad range of tones. We really can’t get over this one!

4 Gameleste

Custom made for Icelandic singer Bjork for her 2011 album Biophilia, gameleste is a combination of gamelan and celesta. While the celesta can be compared with a piano, its sound is much more softer and is often compared to a glockenspiel. Gamelan, on the other hand, is an ensemble music made of percussive instruments found in Indonesia. The above video will help understand gameleste further.

3 Hydraulophone

A hydraulophone is an acoustic musical instrument that uses water to create sound. Musicians are required to play the instrument by blocking the flow of water through their fingers to create distinctive sounds. Blocking the water redirects it to a sound production mechanism depending on its pressure and flow thereby helping to create varied types of sounds.

2 Zeusaphone

Zeusaphone, also called Thoramin and Singing Tesla Coil, is one of the most fascinating instruments in this lineup. Zeusaphone is a form of plasma speaker and a variation of solid state Tesla coil that allows it to produce musical notes from its spark output. This is also responsible for the awesome lightning-like sparks that you see in the video. The name Zeusaphone comes from Zeus, the ancient Greek god of lightning. While not yet wildly popular, Zeusaphone was featured in the flop Disney film ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ in 2010.

1 Singing Ringing Tree

This remarkable piece of music is the perfect blend of superb engineering, great sculpture work and some really creative juices. Located near Lancashire and completed in 2006, this instrument creates music when wind blows through its many pipes to create the most surreal sound you’ve ever heard.
