Although many are wowed by the low-range decibel her voice can hit, to Joy it’s a part of who she Is. From a young age, she was always musical, growing up with a mother who was a Royal Conservatory Piano teacher and insisted she learn how to read music and play the guitar and piano. However, Joy’s favourite instrument was always her voice. She joined her church choir to follow this passion which is where she discovered her ability to reach low tones on the scale. “I was in choirs throughout school and church, but when they scaled my voice for placement, it was realised that I not only could go extremely high, but also low. Choirs are notoriously short on male voices and so ‘Joylow’ was born.” As an adult, Joy did not always follow a career in music. In fact, she owned a successful health and wellness spa for 30 years, as she loved to heal people. Sadly a car accident left her unable to run her business, and so she joined a group of back up singers which led to and even larger opportunity. “I started working with Legends International as a back-up singer at first, but then they realised my potential for morphing my voice into multiple characters. A Diva show was born where I did full costume tributes to Shania Twain, Patsy Cline, Cher, Anne Murray, Reba McEntire, and more. “This ability to morph my voice is also what allows me to go both extremely high and low.” Many who have worked with Joy over the years are surprised by the low range that her voice can hit, including her coaches. This only affirmed her distinct capabilities and just how different her voice was from other individuals. “Working with many vocal coaches over the years, I found it strange that they did not want me to continue scaling down the piano. They always stopped part way and just said ‘that's low enough, you're freaking me out now.’ I didn't realise why they stopped me or that what I had was so unique.” Once Joy realized her abilities, she and her niece (who she was training vocally) began researching the lowest possible note a person could sing. That’s when her niece came across the Guinness World Records title for the lowest vocal note by a female, and knew her aunt could beat it. To accomplish a higher vocal range, Joy mentions the key is relaxing – but she can’t give advice as to how she drops her lower vocals as it’s just something she does. And although Joy did break the record, she knows she can indeed get her voice to go lower, so she plans to try again in the future to set the bar even “lower”!
