What does the 4 in 3/4 mean in piano?

three quarter notes The 3/4 time signature means there are three quarter notes (or any combination of notes that equals three quarter notes) in every measure. As we learned in the prior lesson, because there is a 4 on the bottom, the quarter note gets the beat (or pusle). The 3/4 time signature is sometimes called waltz time.

3/4 Time Signature

Dotted Notes

alt text

The DOT (.) added to any note tells us that you are to add half the value of the note. To the left, we see a half note, which is worth two beats. We then add on half of the value. Half of two is one, so we need to add one beat to the original two beats. This means that the dotted note is worth three beats.
