Simply Guitar is a simply brilliant modern tuition app that gets great results in a short space of time. Perfect for beginners. Simply Guitar is an app that helps you learn how to play the guitar that is especially well suited to beginner guitarists. You can use this guitar learning app on the go by downloading the Simply Guitar app in the Apple App Store for iOS devices or in the Google Play Store for Android devices.

What we love about Simply Guitar

Simply Guitar’s engaging and high quality, interactive lessons provide the musician with a clear step-by-step approach to playing the guitar with good technique and accuracy. The integrated song library, organised by difficulty level allows the user to be able to play songs from the very first lesson, providing them with a clear benchmark of success at every step of the learning journey. The app's ability to listen to the player and provide real-time feedback is a real plus. The user can adjust their playing in order to gain more accuracy and there is always the option of using the slider icon to practice the exercise before the scoring commences.

What skills does it improve?

Simply Guitar develops the guitarists’ technical ability to play both chords and lead guitar-picked melodic parts in time with tailored backing tracks and popular songs. It develops not only physical guitar skills and aural learning but also the players’ ability to read chord and tab notation with clear visuals and real-time feedback. From the outset, the player is guided in how to use the inbuilt tuner, how to properly hold the guitar, and successfully create a clear guitar chord sound. For users with previous guitar experience, there is the option to skip along to much harder courses with advanced chord switching or solos including positionless playing. There are three strands in the courses section - the lead guitar lessons, chord lessons, and then lessons that combine both these skills.

What age is it appropriate for?

The app is most suitable for secondary school children/college and university students across the full range of abilities from beginner to advanced players. It is designed for those who are looking to teach themselves the guitar and complements a weekly practice schedule providing motivation and recognition of progress.

Should you try Simply Guitar?

Yes, without question. While it doesn’t teach you everything, this is nonetheless a brilliant way either to get started, or to break that barrier between playing by ear and actually learning how to play and read guitar properly. With Simply Guitar you may well make faster progress than you ever thought possible. We did. How much does Simply Guitar costs? Simply Guitar costs $19.99 per month after 3 week free trial. Moreover, each account has 5 profiles available for each family member to have a unique journey within the app. Is Simply Guitar free? Simply Guitar is free to download. There is a free 14-day trial which you sign up for when you download the app. Following this, the app is £9.16 per month which is inclusive of all content and the full song library. Is Simply Guitar easy to use? The activities and exercises in Simply Guitar are easy to understand and use. The menu is very straightforward to use for a practice session and has a clear design with quick access to the courses, song library, or chord reference section. The sections are organised by ability so it is easy to scroll through to your current playing level and if you click on a song that is above the level you have reached so far, the app will prompt you to let you know that the chosen piece could be a challenge!

How will students benefit? The Simply Guitar app is useful in helping provide students with clear, visually stimulating and interactive lessons that focus on specific aspects of playing. This could support work completed with a tutor and provide a recap of techniques learned as well as allow the student to move forward in their own practice without having to wait for the next lesson. The wide range of songs in the regularly updated song library also allows the learner to rehearse chord changes and technical knowledge learned in the lessons in the context of different pieces. The real-time feedback means that students can see their progress and make adjustments to their technique as necessary. How will teachers benefit? Simply Guitar will inevitably improve students’ home practice with the 'streak' function to monitor weekly practice time. Additionally, the interactive lessons in which students can revise techniques learned previously will be useful when the teacher is not present. Teachers can also use Simply Guitar in lessons to provide song backings for students to play along to. This could be hugely beneficial in freeing the teacher from playing along with the student and allowing them to focus on observing the student’s technique. From a lesson planning perspective, the staged process of Simply Guitar can help teachers chunk the learning with clear, effective explanations. How will parents benefit? Simply Guitar is designed for beginners of all ages, and it empowers the whole family to learn guitar. The Simply Guitar app is free to try out and is a useful way of supporting home practice, ensuring that rehearsals recap prior learning and expand the child's playing through the range of songs in the library. It allows parents to hear how the child's guitar part fits with the other band parts enabling students to practice their performance fully and hear their playing in the context of the whole song. For parents who are not musical, the app’s ability to provide instant feedback is a benefit.

Yes. Simply Guitar does require an account and email to start with but no other personal data is requested. There are no chat features other than a 'help' chat function and the app's data protection compliance is explained on the website.

We think Simply Guitar could improve on:

It would be useful if you could record your playing in the app in order to listen back and then share this with others/teachers. The ability to filter by genre when searching the song library would also be a benefit. The regular additions to the library will be appreciated by users and it would be nice to see some classical guitar repertoire available in the future.

Overall rating of the app:

I would highly recommend this app to anyone wanting to learn guitar or further develop their guitar skills on either an electric or acoustic instrument. It is an app that is supportive to the weekly practice process and will allow the user to see clearly when they are correctly completing the exercises as well as support them with improvements they need to make. The app is visually stimulating and engaging, and the song library provides a large selection of the most notable guitar song repertoire.

Simply Guitar is a hugely beneficial aid to any budding guitarist.
