The idea of surf and turf was a dream only very few pirates (including pirate captains) could hope for on their first few days of a long voyage. The first few weeks at sea were the best for pirates where their food supplies remained relatively fresh. During this time, pirates would eat a range of food, including cheese, eggs, vegetables and meat, and enjoy hearty meals on the pirate ship. After a month or so, most of the fresh food supplies would have spoiled and gone rotten, meaning that pirates would have to survive on dried supplies. What is often a surprise to people is to hear how pirates would keep animals on board until such a time as there wasn’t enough food to feed them, at which time they would be eaten by the pirates. Chickens were kept for their eggs and cows would provide milk. When it was difficult to keep the animals alive, they would be slowly eaten one by one. Pirate bone soup was a common delicacy when things got rough and contrary to the myths that the bone soup was made with human bones, the broth would have been made from boiled animal bones, like chicken and cows. Of course, there was always fish and the occasional turtle egg.
