What do pirates chant?

Shanties are songs that were sung by sailors and pirates as they sailed the seven seas, intended to keep the men both entertained and motivated during their long spells at sea. The word shanty is sometimes spelled “chanty” as it is derived from the French word “chanter,” which means to sing.

Pirate Shanties for Work and Play

The purpose of singing the shanties was two-fold. On the one hand, the songs served to motivate the pirates in their work, mimicking the rhythm of the hard toil that took place on board ship. The shanties would match the kind of work in hand, most of which was repetitive and rhythmic like mopping the deck, or pulling the rigs etc. The shanty would therefore synchronize workers and make the job more pleasant. On the other hand, there were also shanties for entertainment and passing the time to relieve boredom and homesickness.

Types of Shanties

Most pirate shanties are a call and response format where the shantyman (song leader) would begin the song and all the pirates would sing in reply:

Shantyman: Shiver my timbers, shiver my soul

All pirates: Yo oh, heave ho

Shantyman: There are men whose hearts are as black as coal

All pirates: Yo oh, heave ho

Shantyman: And they sailed their ship cross the ocean blue

A blood-thirsty captain and a cut-throat crew

All pirates: Yo oh, heave ho

This kind of song format unites the crew, pirates or otherwise, and encourages cooperation and synchronized action. However, there were many different types of shanties depending on the kind of work in hand. There were short drag shanties for quick tasks, long drag shanties for timely tasks, pumping shanties for leaking boats, and so on. The entertainment shanties were also of a different nature, reminding pirates of the places and battles they had experienced.

In 2003, the score for “Pirates of the Caribbean” got put together a bit like a patchwork quilt. The initial composer, Alan Silvestri, had a falling out with the director and left the project. The producers approached Hans Zimmer who was under exclusive contract to another film. However, Zimmer brought Klaus Badelt on board. Time was so tight – only three weeks were available to write the music, so a whole flock of additional composers were brought in to work on the orchestral score and write short, additional music cues.
