FIVE PARTS/SECTIONS ON THE KEYBOARD

1. Numeric keys (calculator keys): These are activated by pressing the Num lock key. They are located on the right-hand side of the keyboard. 2. Alphanumeric keys: These keys are located at the central part of the keyboard. They are used for typing letters, numbers and notations into the computer. 3. The Cursor-control keys: These keys control the position of the cursor on the screen. They include insert, del, home, end, page up, page down and the arrow keys (right, left, up and down arrow keys). 4. Function keys: These keys are command keys. They could be ten (F1-F10), twelve (F1-F12) or fifteen (F1-F15) depending on the type of keyboard. 5. Special keys: These keys include the other keys such as print screen, pause or break, window, power, alt, ctrl, tab, shift, scroll lock ,insert ,num lock, caps lock and toggle keys. Toggle keys are keys that are turned on/off by pressing the same key. Examples are num lock which turns on the calculator keys and caps lock which is used for turning on the letter keys to upper case.

CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER KEYBOARDS

Keyboards can be classified in three ways. These are based on:

Types of keys on the keyboard.

The point of connection of the keyboard to the system unit.

The port of connection of the keyboard’s cord.

CLASSIFICATION BASED ON THE TYPES OF KEYS ON THE KEYBOARD

Standard keyboard: It is designed with the QWERTY model. The new standard keyboard has 53keys and offer many advance over QWERTY and DVORAK designs. It has twelve function keys. Ordinary keyboard: This is the old type of keyboard with just about ten function keys and very limited special keys. Enhanced keyboard: It has more keys than the ordinary keyboard. It has twelve function keys and more special keys. It has 101 or 102 keys. Super-enhanced keyboard: It has numerous function keys and more additional special keys.e.g. sleep, power and wake up . CLASSIFICATION BASED ON THE POINT OF CONNECTION OF THE KEYBOARD TO SYSTEM UNIT Corded keyboard: This is a keyboard with a cord attached to the system unit. Cordless keyboard: This is a keyboard with no cord attached to the system unit. It uses a remote sensor to send signals to the system unit.

CLASSIFICATION BASED ON THE PORT OF CONNECTIONNOF KEYBOARD’S CORD

PS/2 Keyboard: It has a PS 2 pin attachment. It requires restarting the computer before detection of the keyboard. Serial keyboard: It has a serial port attachment which requires restarting the keyboard before the keyboard can be detected. USB keyboard (universal serial bus): This is a keyboard with a USB port attachment and it does not require restarting the computer before the selection of the keyboard.

PARTS OF THE COMPUTER KEYBOARD AND THEIR USES

1. Numeric keys: It is used to enter numbers. The various keys in the numeric keypad are: Num lock key: it is used to turn the num lock mode ON and OFF. Enter key: The enter key of the numeric pad function the same ways as the enter key of the typing area. 2. Alphanumeric keys: These are used for typing letters, numbers and notations into the computer. The various keys in the alphanumeric keys are: Letter keys: The letter keys (A-Z) work like the typewriter. When the letter keys are pressed alone, the lower case type appear on the screen. When the keys are pressed while holding down the shift key, the upper-case letter are produced. Spacebar key: The spacebar key adds a blank space between characters. Number keys: The number keys (0-9) work like those on a typewriter. When any of these keys are pressed, the number appears on the screen. When you hold down the shift key and press the number, the upper symbol labelled on the key appears. Symbol keys/notation keys: the symbol keys have two symbols on them. The lower symbol is produced when the key is pressed alone while the upper symbol is produced when the key is pressed while holding down the shift key. Examples of the symbol keys are #, $, %, (, ), [, ] e.t.c. Caps lock keys: it is used to type in upper case letter/capital letter. Shift key: it is used in combination with another key to type an uppercase letter. There are basically two shift keys on the keyboard. Enter key: it shows the end of a line or entry. Backspace key: It moves the cursor one space backward on the screen each time it is pressed. It delete a character or word from the back. Tab key: It causes the cursor on screen to move a set of spaces.

3. Cursor –control keys: These include

I. Home key: This moves the cursor to an starting point.

II. End key: This key moves the cursor to an ending point.

Page up and page down keys: These keys display next page or previous page when pressed. Arrow keys: The left, right, up and down arrow keys are used to move the cursor up, down, left or right.

V. Insert key: It is used to insert a character on text.

Vi. Delete key: This key erase information from the screen.

4. Special keys: These keys include:

II. Pause/Break key: It is used to suspend whatever you are doing.

III. Window key: this key activates the window program manager. It is a toggle key. The toggle key is a key that allows a user to change from one operation to another on a computer system. IV. Alternate key(Alt key): It does not perform any function by itself. It is used in combination with other keys. It is also used together with one or more keys to execute a command or function. V. Control key(Ctrl key): The control key is used with another key to perform a function. VI. ESCAPE(ESC) key: It is used to cancel or escape from the most recent issued command. VII. Print Screen key: It sends the information on the screen to the printer for printing, VIII. Scroll lock key: It is used together with ctrl key to stop a program temporarily. 5. Function keys: The keys on top of keyboard are called function keys. These are used to issue command. Examples:

F1- It is used as the help key.

F2- It renames a highlighted icon file or folder in all version of windows.

F3- It is used to open a search feature for many programs.

F5- It is used to refresh or reload the page or document window.

F7- It is used for grammar check.
