The Best Age to Learn Cello

Some people believe that musical inclination can be passed down to your generation. Some say it is inborn and to others, it depends on the parents. Musicians tend to train their children at an early age so they can pass it to them as a legacy or as a family culture. As a cellist, if you want your children to play your cello someday and follow your professional career or if they chose to without you forcing them, it is important to know the best age you can teach them. If you are not a cellist and your children want to become one someday, you can enroll them in a cello class. The journey in learning to play the cello is not difficult. However, it can’t be learned in an instant. It requires a significant amount of time, discipline, focus, and a great teacher. Unless you are really determined and gifted, it will be difficult for you to learn to play the instrument by simply watching video tutorials online. For parents, it is assumed that the younger the kids learn to play an instrument, the better they’ll become when they grow up. However, for the cello, a recommended age to learn should be considered. Experts say that the best age to learn to play the cello is between 6 to 7 years old. Kids at a younger age will find it hard to focus and control their energy. Most of them prefer to express themselves through interactive physical activities. While we can teach children how to play the cello in a fun way, it could still result in little to no progression. A child could also struggle with frustration when learning to play the cello. If they started to feel frustrated, it could affect their confidence and may find themselves inferior. The cello is not an easy instrument and should be practiced with discipline. If you feel like your child can handle all of these at a young age, you have to consider the following before pushing them to learn how to play the cello: Choose an instrument size that fits your child. For cellos, measurements of 1/16, ⅛, and ¼ are the standard size for younger ones. Things such as how to hold a cello bow or maintaining the proper posture while playing should be taught in the simplest manner. One should be able to teach kids in a way that they will easily understand. Start learning the music that they are familiar with. Most of the time, kids who know the piece that they’ll be learning to play will surely enjoy each practice session. Let them learn with others. Aside from making new friends, allowing them to learn with other kids will help them improve their social skills. Lastly, engage your child’s interest. Evaluate them with the progress they’re making in playing the instrument but also attend to their concerns and interests. Listen to their stories and always provide them the support that they need along the way.
