Antique pianos are classed as a piano that is at least 100 years old and, in many instances, will display a quieter, flute-like sound that sets them apart from modern pianos. There are many buyers who are interested in antique pianos, whether it is to add to a collection, as an investment or perhaps to use in the film and television industry. In this article, we will be delving into antique pianos, their worth and why they can be good pianos to purchase.

Are antique pianos worth anything?

As with many antique items, antique pianos can either be worth very little or be incredibly valuable. Many older instruments are generally worth very little if they are in poor condition and will not be worth the money it would take to restore them. However, some pianos are incredibly unique, rare or have been kept in excellent condition over a long period and will be worth considerably more. Some antique pianos are worth tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of pounds, with the higher price points usually reserved for those built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Understandably, most people will not have the relevant knowledge or experience needed to value an antique piano accurately. Several important factors need to be considered when determining the market value of an antique instrument which is why you will need to consult with a piano appraiser. Only with a professional evaluation will you be able to find out its worth and then market it accordingly.

Are antique pianos good?

If properly cared for, any piano can sound and look great for years to come, but this can be slightly more complicated when it comes to antiques. Antiques can quickly become worthless if they have not been adequately cared for and have fallen into complete disrepair. However, there are antique pianos that are still worth owning and could reach their full potential if professionally restored. Newer, more modern mechanisms can be made for your piano to help restore it, whether you are looking to keep the instrument as a family heirloom or repair it to sell.
