In the movie written and directed by Jane Campion, Hunter stars as a Scotswoman named Ada McGrath who has been mute since she was a young child. She and her daughter are then shipped to New Zealand as Ada’s father promised her to be married to Allistair (Sam Neill) down there. As part of the move, Ada tries to bring along her beloved piano as it’s the only way she feels she can speak besides through her daughter who serves as a sort of translator. However, there is no room for the piano at Allistair’s and she must leave it on the beach. What follows is Ada’s journey to try and find happiness, love, and herself in this new life, all of it being embodied by the lost piano. It’s a truly beautiful story that is one-of-a-kind to say the very least. Between the fantastic writing and direction of The Piano and the Oscar-winning performance from Hunter, there was never a doubt that the film would rank on the 50 Best Movies on Amazon Prime Video once it began streaming.
