Is The Pianist appropriate for kids?

Lots of violence; the Nazis are practically killing everyone they see in this movie, so definitely not for kids under 14 or mature kids under 13.

'The Pianist' is a 2002 biographical war drama film produced and directed by Roman Polanski, and starring Academy Award winner Adrien Brody. The movie is based on the autobiographical book 'The Pianist', a Holocaust memoir by the Polish-Jewish pianist and composer Wladyslaw Szpilman, a Holocaust survivor. The movie won the Palme d'Or during the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. At the 75th Academy Awards, the film won Best Director (Polanski), Best Adapted Screenplay (Harwood), and Best Actor (Brody), and was nominated for four others, including Best Picture (it would lose to 'Chicago'). It also won the BAFTA Award for Best Film and BAFTA Award for Best Direction in 2003, and seven French Cesars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Brody. It was also included in BBC's 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century in 2016. Because of how good the plot is, even with it being almost 100% true (based off of the book), I won't be spoiling it for your own good :). However, I will be mentioning some smaller parts to show the type and severity of violence shown in the movie, so if you want everything to be a surprise, stop reading this review, but just now there are a lot of dead bodies. SOMEWHAT SPOILER: This movie is rated R, which is fair compared to other movies rated R, but it isn't as bad as some movies. There is some profanity, but its very rare and its necessary for the scene, and there's no nudity of sexual jokes. The only thing that makes this movie rated R other than the slight use of profanity is how intense and gruesome some of the scenes are, despite being very much realistic. One of the darkest and most gruesome scenes is when the German soldiers went into one of the townhomes the Germans had made specifically for the Jews, and asked all the members of this family to stand up. One of the members of the family was in a wheelchair and couldn't stand up, but the German soldiers continued to scream at him to stand up. When the Germans finally got impatient, they threw the disabled family member out the window. It didn't show him hit the ground after the 3 story fall, but it did show the aftermath, where his wheelchair lay on top of him with blood pouring out of his head. The German troops than proceeded to let the Jews from this family run with their hands on their heads, as if they would be let free, but the Germans would shoot them right when they were about to escape. There is also multiple scenes with dead bodies and blood, but the blood isn't as bad as other war movies. Like one scene where some dead Jewish bodies were piled up and than burned. If you can handle movies like 'Saving Private Ryan', you could easily handle 'The Pianist'. At the end of the day, you have to know you child. If they can handle seeing a few dead bodies and someone getting thrown out a 3-story window without having nightmares and making it more dramatic than it is, than don't let them watch it. But, I do now some of my friends who have said how they watched it in 8th grade and 7th grade social studies and history classes, so it isn't incredibly severe, despite some claims.

Absolutely! Our note recognition software can detect the sound from acoustic pianos using the built-in microphone of your device. Most modern phones, laptops, and tablets feature perfectly good, built-in microphones for recognizing the notes and pitches on a piano. Please note that our app is tuned to standard pitch (440 Hz). To get the best results, limit the amount of background noise in the room and make sure your piano is also tuned to standard pitch. On this page, you can check if your instrument is tuned to 440 Hz. To test your tuning, please allow your browser to access your microphone. Counting from the left, play the fourth A note (close to middle C). If the cursor is too far off 440 Hz, your instrument might need tuning. Opening the lid, or top, can also help to improve the microphone's note detection.
