Is Squidward tone deaf?

The force of the giant bubble popping possibly messed up Squidward's hearing, leaving him partially deaf. Long story short, Squidward could have actually been a great or at least decent musician, but SpongeBob's antics and his own pride got in the way.

Cartoons exist in a world of constants. The Powerpuff Girls will always fight crime. Steven Universe will always try his best to be a good person. The Mystery Machine crew will always solve crimes. However, what if I told you that one of the biggest constants in the history of modern animation may very well be a lie? Squidward Tentacles may have actually once been a decent clarinet player. Welcome to Really Internet, a corner of the web dedicated to breaking down some of the silliest, weirdest, and most surprisingly believable fan theories from around the web. Today we’re diving into one of the most beloved Nicktoons in recent history and the grandfather of oh-so-many memes — SpongeBob SquarePants. Buckle up, Bikini Bottom fans.

WHAT’S THE THEORY?

If there are three things that everyone knows about Squidward Tentacles it’s that he’s moody, he hates SpongeBob and Patrick, and he loves the clarinet even though he’s a terrible musician. However, according to at least one dedicated SpongeBob fan, it’s possible that Squidward actually began the show as a pretty decent clarinet player. He just lost part of his hearing thanks to none other than SpongeBob and Patrick.

WHY IT’S NOT THAT CRAZY

This happens in the first part of SpongeBob SquarePants‘ second episode, “Bubblestand.” In the episode, SpongeBob loudly builds a bubble blowing stand, which interrupts his neighbor and co-worker’s clarinet practice session. Squidward, deeply annoyed with SpongeBob and wanting to teach him a lesson, decides to spitefully start using SpongeBob’s bubble blowing stand. However, he’s unable to produce any sort of impressive bubble until he uses SpongeBob’s patented (and weird) technique. It’s only then that Squidward and his screaming blow the biggest bubble the trio have ever seen. He smugly returns to his house to practice the clarinet while SpongeBob and Patrick chant his name. According to the Reddit user quigglebaby, that’s the moment that changed Squidward’s life. While he’s practicing in this episode, Squidward actually plays the clarinet decently for one of the only times in the series. But while this momentous thing is happing, the giant bubble drifts back down and wraps around Squidward and his house. After lifting up the house several feet (inches? What measurement is used in SpongeBob?), the bubble pops, stunning Squidward and messing up his house. What we don’t see and what this fan theory posits is much sadder than a few lopsided pictures. The force of the giant bubble popping possibly messed up Squidward’s hearing, leaving him partially deaf. Long story short, Squidward could have actually been a great or at least decent musician, but SpongeBob’s antics and his own pride got in the way.

WHY IT’S QUESTIONABLE

The main thing holding back this theory is the pacing of SpongeBob SquarePants as a whole. SpongeBob is one of the most random cartoons to ever exist. This theory depends on a lot of plot consistency, which is unlikely for this deeply silly show. Another Reddit user on the same thread proposed another reason why Squidward’s music was magically great in “Bubblestand.” According to that user, it was Squidward screaming out his pent up frustrations that transformed his clarinet playing into something worth hearing. Whether it happened because of SpongeBob, his own ego, his unexpressed emotions, or the random laws of this cartoon, one thing will always remain true. Squidward will always be remembered as the worst clarinet player in animation history.

Take a look at instruments from around the world, from the ornate and the extravagant, to the simple and straightforward.

1. Ðàn Tre

The Ðàn Tre, which translates as “bamboo musical instrument” is an especially unusual instrument as there are only two in the world, made by Vietnamese refugee Minh Tam Nguyen to give himself a creative outlet in the labour camp he had been sent to. A fusion of European and Asian musical traditions, it is made from recycled materials found around the camp: a bamboo tube; a four-liter tin of olive oil that amplifies the sound traveling down the tube; and 23 strings made from the inside of a United States army telephone cable.
