Is singing a talent or a skill?

Singing takes both talent and skill. A person is said to be talented when they can use physical intelligence to imitate something they see or hear others do. For instance, you hear someone else sing. Your mind and body and soul process it. And then you use your mouth and your body to repeat it back.

If you ever watched American Idol, you know that some singers are better than others. What makes one singer “better” than another? Well, here’s the bigger question: Is singing a talent or a skill?

Are people born to sing, with a natural talent that makes it seemingly effortless to sound great? Or do people have to learn and practice singing skills in order to become the singer they want to be?

If and when you or someone you know is thinking about taking singing lessons, you might be asking these aforementioned questions.

Singing takes both talent and skill.

So what is talent, anyway? A person is said to be talented when they can use physical intelligence to imitate something they see or hear others do. For instance, you hear someone else sing. Your mind and body and soul process it. And then you use your mouth and your body to repeat it back. Some people do this with hardly any effort– so they’re said to be talented singers, right? But the majority of singers actually work on their singing skills, developing their vocals over time to the point where they improve how they sing… they get guidance from a helpful teacher or coach. What skills can be taught and learned when it comes to singing? There’s pitch, range and confidence. Vocal lessons help a person sing “in tune” with others, as well as develop their musical “ear” to learn to sing in tune accurately. With vocal exercises, a singer can likely expand their range from one octave to more than one octave– it’s totally possible and do-able with some practice. Then there’s the issue of confidence. Most people need some coaching that encourages them to get rid of their fear of singing in public. Too many people fear that they’ll “mess up” or that others will negatively judge them. Fear needs to be replaced with confidence, which is exactly what vocal lessons can do for a person. Even some of the most talented singers on the planet work with vocal coaches to improve or enhance their singing ability. Enhance your talent and improve your skill(s)– take vocal lessons with Sing Like A Star.
