I am thrilled today to announce that Piano Maestro is now FREE (just) for registered teachers and their students. This is a big and exciting change for the JoyTunes Community. We have come a long way since I first watched my nephew prefer his Wii over his piano, and it is in very large part thanks to our incredible community of teachers. Piano Maestro, since its launch last year, has grown leaps and bounds, in large part to your feedback. As all our apps do, Piano Maestro works directly with your acoustic piano, no wires needed. We are thrilled to hear each day that student’s sight reading, rhythm and coordination is improving, thanks to Piano Maestro. We are continuously adding new content and currently Piano Maestro contains over 1,000 songs and exercises and multiple method books. As JoyTunes continues to grow, and motivate thousands of piano students to practice their piano, I realized how much of an impact our growing partnership with teachers has influenced our success. When we first began our Teacher Facebook group 1 year ago we went in with the mindset of hearing directly from the teachers. We wanted to create an open dialogue- we wanted to begin building a partnership. 1 year later we have exceeded our expectations. We have expanded our teacher community network and resources we offer. We have discussed, listened, updated and improved the app accordingly. We have done it all side by side with our partners, our JoyTunes Teachers.

Fun Features

Some of the most fun features we created this year, based on teachers requests were: Home Challenge – to easily assign Piano Maestro pieces to students as homework. Practice Options and Learn Mode – for gradual step by step mastering of new melodies and skills. When we thought more about our partnership I realized that any true partnership should not be restricted. I came to the realization that in order to solidify our partnership, and assist all students in improving their piano skills, Piano Maestro needed to become FREE. I want every single teacher and their students to have the opportunity to experience, play and learn from Piano Maestro, and I knew that would only become possible by making Piano Maestro free, for registered teachers and their students. Many thought I was crazy, but I knew by doing so, we would be enhancing the lessons of thousands more piano teachers and students.

The Partnership

Our partnership with teachers is continuing to grow through local clinics, webinars, blog posts and our online discussions. Your feedback and suggestions continues to shape the way we update Piano Maestro. I believe JoyTunes has the potential to change the way children around the world learn music – and I am thrilled to be working in partnership with you to make that change happen. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for helping JoyTunes become a reality and I look forward to our continued partnership.

Does playing the piano count as exercise?

Improve the body Even though you're sitting down, playing the piano is a workout all its own, and offers different physical and physiological advantages to players of all ages. For instance, regular piano playing sharpens fine motor skills and improves hand-eye coordination in the young and developing.

Sharpen the intellect

Piano practice also boosts cognitive and intellectual abilities, which is to say it makes you smarter and activates similar parts of the brain used in spatial reasoning and math. Studying piano has also been shown to amazingly improve memory — particularly verbal memory — and build good habits like focus and perseverance, diligence and creativity. Children who had a few years of piano study under their belts could remember twenty percent more vocabulary words than their peers. And childhood musicians are better equipped later in life to retain information from speeches and lectures. Playing piano has been shown to increase spatial-temporal ability, which figures heavily in math, science and engineering. Regular music practice at an early age can even make structural changes to the brain that stay with you for the rest of your life, making your brain more efficient both while playing and in extra-musical endeavors. Children who had a few years of piano study under their belts could remember twenty percent more vocabulary words than their peers.

Calm the mind

Studies show that time spent at the keyboard improves mental health: people who make music experience less anxiety, loneliness, and depression. Playing piano has also been shown to be a great source of stress relief, and provides ample opportunities to bolster self-esteem. It is also a widely used form of therapy for Attention Deficit Disorder.
