Lisa Witt grew up in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in education. While teaching middle school English, she pursued her Master’s Degree in Professional Development in Education. She married Chad Witt in 1989, gave birth to Grace in July of 2002, and Ian, in 2006, has Down Syndrome. After several moves from South Dakota, Colorado, and Iowa, they finally landed in Wisconsin. After 15 years in education, she founded WittFitt, a company based on her passion for incorporating movement into the classroom using active furniture. In their community of Hudson, she and Chad became advocates for people with special needs. They coach Special Olympics Track, assist in coordinating an inclusive hockey program, and speak [with Ian at their side] to Augsburg College students about raising Ian and life in a special needs family. Additionally, Witt is the Hudson School District’s Special Education Parent Liaison.
What surprises you most about being a mom?
What surprises me the most about being a mother is how much I have changed and learned from Grace and Ian. When I became a mother, I assumed that I would always be the one doing all of the teaching and mentoring. Much to my surprise both Grace and Ian have helped me evolve and grow. Grace opens my eyes to aspects about myself that maybe I didn’t want to acknowledge, thus challenging me to do better, to be better. Ian, with his superhero extra chromosome, has made me more patient, vulnerable, and adaptable than I ever thought possible.
Who has been impactful in your journey as a mother? What lessons do you carry with you and share often through motherhood?
The Lessons I carry with me and share with other mothers are again deeply rooted in what I have learned and observed from the way my children live their lives. As a mother, it is more important to admit my mistakes, than to always be right. It is more important to be open and vulnerable than it is to always appear as if I have all the answers. My children need to see my successes, as well as my failures so they ultimately learn how to be grateful and humble for the good stuff, yet resilient during the tough times.
What continues to inspire you in your motherhood journey?
Every day, I am inspired as I witness Grace and Ian strive to become independent, make their own choices, and spreading their wings in their own unique way. It is not easy letting them go out into the world on their own, yet I am realizing that each new chapter in their lives allows me to take on a new role that ultimately brings us closer together.
