From Edward Scissorhands To Captain Jack Sparrow Hollywood star, Johnny Depp, who is currently celebrating his big win in the defamation lawsuit against his former wife Amber Heard, turns 59 today. Depp, who began his acting career with his debut film 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' in 1984, is a superstar with several blockbusters under his name. In 2012, the Guinness World Records listed Depp as the world's highest-paid actor with earnings allegedly crossing $75 million in a year. As we celebrate Johnny Depp’s 59th birthday, here’s a look at the top five best performances by the actor that can never be forgotten. Edward Scissorhands This role is by far one of the best performances by Depp. In the film, the star played the role of a humanoid named Edward, who has scissors for his hands. 'Edward Scissorhands' also starred Winona Ryder as Kim, who was Depp's love interest in the movie. Make-up artists used prosthetics and skin-tight suits to help the actor get into the character. Willy Wonka When the film, based on British author Roald Dahl's 1964 book 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' was released in 2005, Depp played the role of Willy Wonka, which was previously aced by legendary actor Gene Wilder in the book's first film adaptation in 1971. So when Depp signed up for the role, he had a huge expectation to meet, and the actor delivered successfully as it became one of his finest performances. With a bob haircut, white powder on his face and lavender-coloured contact lenses, Depp got into the skin of the character. The actor's look for the character was loosely based on the 1890's style. Depp's role as the Mad Hatter was well received by fans from all across the world. Captain Jack Sparrow When Depp was cast as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the actor was already a superstar. Depp's popularity only increased, especially overseas, thanks to his stellar performance as a witty pirate in the 2003 film.

Listen to the enchanting sound of the world’s oldest song, the Hurrian Hymn

By Lizzie Davis

The Hurrian Hymn was discovered in the 1950s on a clay tablet inscribed with Cuneiform text. It’s the oldest surviving melody and is over 3,400 years old. The hymn was discovered on a clay tablet in Ugarit, now part of modern-day Syria, and is dedicated the Hurrians’ goddess of the orchards Nikkal. The clay tablet text, which was discovered alongside around 30 other tablet fragments, specifies 9 lyre strings and the intervals between those strings – kind of like an ancient guitar tab. But this is the only hymn that could be reconstructed – although the name of the composer is now lost.

Here it is:

Doesn’t look much like music, does it…?

The system of music notation we use now wasn’t invented until 1000 AD. This is something altogether different. The notation here is essentially a set of instructions for intervals and tuning based around a heptatonic diatonic scale. There’s much more detail about the precise language and instructions here. The lyrics are very difficult to translate, but one academic has come up with this rendering of them: ‘Once I have endeared the deity, she will love me in her heart,

the offer I bring may wholly cover my sin,

bringing sesame oil may work on my behalf in awe may I'

Here’s the whole haunting melody
