If a traditional piano is stored on its side or back, it will likely go out of tune, especially when you take it out of storage. Digital pianos don’t have the same mechanics as traditional pianos, so they can’t go out of tune when they are moved. The notes are digitally programmed rather than caused by mallets hitting strings. How to Protect a Digital Piano Before Putting into Storage:

Clean dust and debris off of digital piano

Polish digital piano if it has wood on the frame

Cover digital piano with piano cover or blanket

Before you put a digital piano into storage, clean off all of the dust and dirt. Excess dust and dirt can get into the small spaces between keys and into the mechanics of the keyboard and cause damage and decay. If your digital piano has wood on the frame rather than plastic, polish the wood. This will ensure the wood is healthy, clean, and looks beautiful when you take your piano out of storage. If your digital piano frame is plastic, you don’t need to polish it, but you will probably still want to give it a wipe-down after taking it out of storage. When you are done cleaning and polishing your digital piano, it is ready to put into storage. Just cover your piano with a piano cover or a blanket; this will prevent dust and dirt from getting into the crevices. Make sure the power cord is tied together with a zip tie and tucked away so it doesn’t get damaged while the digital piano is in storage. Now that you know what to do before you put your digital piano into storage, you just need to find the perfect place to store it.

Where to Store a Digital Piano

When you put a digital piano into storage, you need to make sure that the conditions are right. If they aren’t right, the piano may be damaged and unusable when you want to use it again. When you put a digital piano into storage, make sure that the area isn’t incredibly humid. If the room has more than 42% humidity, put a dehumidifier in the room. Don’t put the digital piano into storage until the humidity is reduced. If you don’t, the humidity may cause the plastic and keys of the keyboard to warp, especially if the temperature is extremely warm.

Do not store your digital piano (or traditional piano for that matter) near doors, fireplaces, or windows. Windows will let dust into the room that will get onto the piano or its cover. If the digital piano is near a door, people can hit, kick, and trip on it, which will damage the piano. The heat of the fireplace can overheat the motherboard or melt the plastic and keys of the digital piano, making it unusable. Actually, just don’t store your digital piano near a device that emits heat at all. Excessive heat is not good for mechanics, and the heat from a heater can cause the plastic to crack, damaging the piano. Put your digital piano in a place where it will not be exposed to sunlight, water, or moisture. Moisture and water will damage the electrical workings inside of the digital piano, and you may not be able to use it after you take it out of storage if that occurs. Sunlight can overheat the circuits and cause the color of the plastic to leech. If your digital piano is slightly too large to store in a small space, take it apart. Take off the legs and store them in a similar area as the digital piano so they can be easily found.
