SHARP: A note that is one semitone higher in pitch than another note, so that F-sharp is higher than F, for example.

SOLO: Playing or singing alone, or as a featured instrumentalist or singer with an orchestra or choir. A solo performer is called a soloist.

SONATA: Originally a piece of music that is played rather than sung, but mainly a long work for one or two instruments in several movements. The first movement is usually in sonata form, and the last movement a lively rondo. In between come a slow movement and often a minuet.

SOPRANO: The female voice with the highest range, or usually the highest instrument in a range of instruments. Soprano is above alto.

STAFF: The set of five lines on and around which music is written. Also called a stave.

SYMPHONY: A long work for orchestra, sometimes including a chorus and solo singer, in several movements. A symphony usually has the same structure as a sonata, often having four movements, the first of which is in sonata form. But the orchestra gives the symphony a much greater contrast of sound.

TEMPO: The speed at which a piece of music is played or sung.

TENOR: A male voice with a medium-low range, or an instrument of medium-low pitch in a group of related instruments. Tenor is below alto and above baritone.

THEME: A melody, or a short sequence of notes, on which a piece of music is based. THEME and VARIATIONS: A piece of music that begins with a particular theme or tune, which is then repeated several times but changes or varied in some way.

TONAL: Music that is a particular key, or which changes from one key to another. Tonal music often has the sense of moving toward certain home note or key, on which it may end.

TONE: The kind of sound produced by an instrument or the sound of a definite pitch.

TREBLE: High in pitch.

TUNING: Adjusting the pitch of the notes produced by an instrument so that they are the same as a standard pitch, often given by a tuning fork. The instrument is then “in tune”. Instruments that play together must be in tune with each other.

VIRTUOSO: A performer who can sing or play with great skill or “virtuosity”.

WALTZ or VALSE: A dance in triple time (three beats to the bar) that was very popular in the 19th century. There are many waltzes for piano or orchestra that are played as pieces of music for listening rather than dancing.

Is Lady Gaga an autotune?

The 28-year-old singer says people never got to hear her original voice, reported Contactmusic. "Since The Fame, The Fame Monster and Born This Way, they've been auto-tuning it more, or changing the timbre. They take the vibrato out so you sound like a robot. They really control you especially in the beginning.

Pop sensation Lady Gaga believes auto-tuning has affected her vocal presence.

"Since The Fame, The Fame Monster and Born This Way, they've been auto-tuning it more, or changing the timbre. They take the vibrato out so you sound like a robot. They really control you especially in the beginning. "Although it was still my songs, and I still had a lot to say about the production, the vocal was something that they really, really wanted to control. So my vocal presence has been kind of the smallest presence about me for a long time. So everything else becomes the focal point," she said.
