Wood is mainly basswood, while MDF stands for medium-density fireboard, and is a man-made wood. Now, let's look at them both individually. When it comes to choosing the perfect shutter material for your home, the choice is mainly down to preference.

So, you’ve made the commitment to transform your home with some perfect shutters, but now you have to choose between wood or MDF Shutters and you’re asking yourself where do I start? Shutup Shutters is here to shed some light on the differences between the two, as well as some of the advantages and disadvantages you can expect in order to make a more informed decision. First of all, in the world of interior shutters, these two materials are the most commonly used. Wood is mainly basswood, while MDF stands for medium-density fireboard, and is a man-made wood. Now, let’s look at them both individually.

Wood Shutters

More flexible than MDF – wooden shutters can be fitted to odd-sized windows Lighter than MDF – making them considerably better than MDF for bigger windows such as balcony doors/french doors and easier to use Colours and finishes – available in a large range of both colours and finishes, therefore enabling complete customisation

Variety of woods available – this includes pine, oak, cedar and more

Natural and organic – making the shutters appear authentic and traditional

Disadvantages

More expensive than MDF

Not suitable for rooms which have a tendency of being humid, unlike MDF Will appear worn sooner – due to not having a plastic coating like MDF, wood will appear worn sooner as it is more susceptible to moisture

MDF Shutters

Cheaper than wood – due to their non-authentic nature, MDF shutters tend to be significantly cheaper than wood Will last longer – finished with a polymer coating making them hard-wearing and resistant to superficial damage such as scratches Look real – many people are unable to tell the difference between wood and MDF shutters

Available in different shades of white

Easier to clean – since they are coated with plastic, rather than paint, MDF shutters are much easier to wide clean if needed

Immune to moisture, unlike wood shutters

Disadvantages

Not available in colour – therefore unable to completely customise

Heavier than wood – more difficult to install, and not recommended for bigger windows such as balcony doors/french doors When it comes to choosing the perfect shutter material for your home, the choice is mainly down to preference. However, if your window would best suit a specific material, our experts will let you know upon consultation. It’s also important to add that your material choice won’t limit your customisation (aside from colours), with either material you are still able to choose louvre size, hinge colour and any extra touches. How do you bend balsa wood without breaking it?

Try soaking and steaming the balsa. If that doesn't work then just use thinner balsa and laminate it together. I usually steam the wood for about 30 minutes or so.

Timing on this comment is probably a WAY too late but nevertheless, information is where & when you get it! Depending on the thinckness of the balsa you are attempting to "bend", the thinner stuff (as well as the thick) of course, steaming is a given, but you can actually spray some "window cleaner" onto your strips of balsa. The ammonia in it will do the work. Spray it lightely, soak it, wipe off the excess, let it dry a little. Depending on the adhesive you use, the moisture content is also ian mportant factor.
