6.10.2 Description of Bituminous Coating Systems

The bituminous coating system consists of a cold-applied primer coat, which should be selected in conjunction with the bitumen or coal-tar derived coating material with which it should be compatible. Coal-tar primer or bitumen primer should be used with coal-tar enamel or bituminous enamel, respectively, and is suitable only for site or yard application. Fast-drying synthetic primer can be used both with coal tar and bituminous enamel and is suitable for site application and field or ditch application. The primer should apply at the thickness specified by the manufacturer with reference to the relevant standards for each primer. One or more coats of bituminous coal-tar enamel or bituminous enamel are built up to form the thickness required for the type of protection. One or more reinforcements of glass fiber mat as inner wrap, embedded in each protective layer. One protective layer of coal tar or bitumen-saturated fiber glass mat as an outer wrap. One solar protective layer, in the case of coal-tar enamel, with the following formula as a whitewash to prevent excessive heating of the coating by solar radiation.

All whitewash should be mixed as described next:

Whitewash ingredients should include water, 3.8 l boiled linseed oil, 68 kg processed quicklime, and 4.5 kg salt. Add the salt to water, then add quicklime and linseed oil slowly and simultaneously, and then mix thoroughly. Next, allow the mixture to stand at least 3 days before it is used. In certain special cases [for example, the nature of backfill, rocky areas, environmental temperatures, or working temperatures (i.e., about 50°C)], an additional mechanical protections as rockshield under the concrete coating and concrete slabs or rockshield may be specified by the designer with reference to the job requirements.

What do you seal basswood with?

Sealing Basswood Carvings After sanding, wipe the wood clean of any dust with a lint-free rag dampened with mineral spirits or a tack cloth. Prepare a 50:50 mixture of polyurethane varnish and mineral spirits. Using a paint brush, coat the surface of the carvings with the thinned varnish. More items... •

Some woods are very absorbent. Basswood is one of those woods. Because of its absorbency, it should be sealed before staining. If you don’t seal it, don’t be surprised if some parts of the carving absorb more stain than other parts, resulting in a blotchy appearance. In Why Seal Wood Before Staining I recommend shellac as a sealer. You have other alternatives to shellac. You could use a wood conditioner, such as Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. Be aware that wood conditioners are not the same thing as a sanding sealers. Only use a sanding sealer if you are not staining the wood but just coating the substrate with a clean finish, such as varnish. Another option is to seal the wood with thinned polyurethane varnish. I have recently used this mixture on two carvings with great success. Here’s what I did.
