I have a flowkey premium account, and I love it. You can read my full review with video here. I know I’m just a sample size of 1, but I’ve researched and tested many music learning products out there, and I found flowkey to be very satisfying. So perhaps you’re considering upgrading from the free trial, and you’re wondering if the premium account is worth it. Below is a quick overview of the costs. If you haven’t tried flowkey yet, you can get a free trial here.

How Much Does it Cost?

At the time of writing this, flowkey premium has 4 pricing options:

$19.99 per month

$12.99 per month (3 month commitment)

$9.99 per month (12 month commitment)

$299.99 for lifetime access

As with many music learning memberships, you save money when you buy a year membership.

The standard plan is $19.99 per month, and you can cancel anytime.

If you pay for 3 months in advance, it’s $12.99 per month (saves you $21). If you pay for 12 months, it’s $9.99 per month (saves you $120). The lifetime membership is a lot upfront, but you will save money over the years. One thing to always keep in mind, is comparing these prices to real in person lessons. You might get 10 hours worth of lessons if you’re lucky for $299. With flowkey, and other online piano programs, you can get 24/7 access forever, for the same price.

What Do You Get?

A premium account will give you:

Access to over 500 song lessons

Access to all the courses (more on the way)

Full access on all your devices

I personally use flowkey on my laptop, however with a premium account you can use it on multiple devices.

Cost Comparison with other Courses

From what I’ve seen, the standard price for similar products is $9.99 per month. So flowkey is priced competitively. It might be worth trying it out for $19.99 per month, but I would recommend saving money with the other options. The 3 months at $12.99 plan is the most popular according to their website. Other popular programs like Playground Sessions have similar pricing. $9.99 per month, and lifetime membership options. Bottom line, get started with a free trial first. Click here to sign up. Keep in mind, to make the most out of all these learning programs will require some type of payment eventually. Free trials are a great way to test out the product, but to get all the best features and full access, you will need to some type of plan. I have a premium account and I would recommend you get one as well.

How far can the average pianist reach?

Up to this point, the pianist cannot normally play a tenth, and more importantly, fast passages of octaves and large chords can be uncomfortable and involve pain or tension. From the available data, we can estimate that about 76% of adult men have hand spans that can reach 8.5 inches or more.

There is a very wide variation in the hand spans of pianists. Hand spans among adult men and women can vary by as much as 5 inches (12.7 cm). The available data indicate that, on average , the hand spans of adult male (thumb to fifth finger) are about one inch (or 2.5 centimetres) greater than those of adult females. This means men can reach, on average, more than one extra white key on the current keyboard. An important benchmark separating ‘small’ from ‘large’ hands is a span of 8.5 inches. Up to this point, the pianist cannot normally play a tenth, and more importantly, fast passages of octaves and large chords can be uncomfortable and involve pain or tension. From the available data, we can estimate that about 76% of adult men have hand spans that can reach 8.5 inches or more. This leaves about 24% of men who cannot play a tenth. For women, the situation is much worse, as an estimated 87% of adult females do not have hands large enough to play a tenth.
