Piano, a Brief History

The history of the piano dates back to more than three centuries, when Bartolomeo Cristofori, an Italy-based harpsichord builder, produced a new mechanism that allowed playing dynamic variations in the harpsichord. It was indeed a breakthrough invention with advanced technology back then. However, before the keyword that Bartolomeo Cristofori came up with, only two keyboards were widely used during the 1400s.

Piano in the 1700s

In the 1700s, clavichords were constructed using bichords strings, which are tangents stuck to each key's end. It was usually made with brass. As the key tapped, the tangent struck a string and made contact with them, which acted like a fret. Simultaneously, strings were set in motion by tangents at speaking length. Surprisingly, varying pressure on the key produced vibrato effects. These clavichords remained in use for about 300-400 years. During the same time, the harpsichord was in trend.

Piano in the 1800s

The musical instrument builders and makers continued their research and application of different techniques to improve the mechanics of the keyboard. The implementation of new mechanics continued for decades between 1700 to 1800, and yet, there was no better result than Bartolomeo Cristofori’s innovation. However, a Parisian inverter named Sebastian Erard invented the ‘twin escapement’, better known as the repetition mechanism, which made it possible to hit the string with a hammer before the key returned to its original position. It made a rapid repetition possible and also gave a romantic composition.

Piano in the 1900s

The period between World War 1 and the Great Depression was considered the Golden Age for the piano. This timeline marked the history of the completion of the development of the musical instrument, the piano. By and large, our present piano is a replica of the same but with improved mechanism, features and a tint of more advanced technology. With the advancement of technology, computer design and CNC machinery introduced to the piano ushered a new era of a refreshed and refined piano. Coming to the designing approach of a piano, many manufacturers used acoustic modelling.
