Every musician ought to be able to play all 12 keys on their musical instrument. As a Piano player, If you cannot play all 12 keys yet, then you know that there is a certain feeling that comes with the inability to do so. If you cannot play all 12 keys on the Piano yet, you know that it could take a hit on your confidence. I remember when I could not yet play all 12 keys on the Piano, I would feel nervous whenever I had to play somewhere and I saw an unfamiliar keyboard. I definitely would not have loved to be presented with a real acoustic Piano. I was nervous if a song has one or more modulations and my dexterity on the Piano was capped and it almost felt like I would not improve unless I learnt how to play all 12 keys on the Piano.

How I Learnt All 12 Keys

Learning how to play all 12 keys on the Piano is quite an easy task. You only need time and patience. It took me one month to master one key and a total of 11 months to master every other key apart from the key of C which was my best key then.

The Formula to Learn All Keys

In order to learn and master all 12 keys you need to go back to the basics for every single key and work your way up. However, you must note that learning how to play all 12 keys is not learning all the chords and nice moves you know all over again in all 12 keys. The idea is simply to train your fingers and muscle memory to understand the new key and you will be able to play all keys the same way you can play your best key.

What You Need to Start Doing

Learn the major scale of the new key

Start doing finger exercises on the new key

Start playing simple chord progressions in the new key

Start playing simple songs in the new key

If you are a church musician, transpose all of Sunday songs to the key you are learning Do this for one month and you would have learnt a new key

Rinse and repeat for other keys

What key Did Mozart use?

G minor has been considered the key through which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart best expressed sadness and tragedy, and many of his minor key works are in G minor. Though Mozart touched on various minor keys in his symphonies, G minor is the only minor key he used as a main key for his numbered symphonies.

G minor has been considered the key through which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart best expressed sadness and tragedy,[1] and many of his minor key works are in G minor. Though Mozart touched on various minor keys in his symphonies, G minor is the only minor key he used as a main key for his numbered symphonies. In the Classical period, symphonies in G minor almost always used four horns, two in G and two in B♭ alto.[2] Another convention of G minor symphonies observed in Mozart's No. 25 and No. 40 was the choice of the subdominant of the relative key (B♭ major), E♭ major, for the slow movement; other non-Mozart examples of this practice include J. C. Bach Opus 6 No. 6 from 1769, Haydn's No. 39 (1768/69) and Johann Baptist Wanhal's G minor symphony sometime before 1771 (Bryan Gm1).[3] Isolated sections in this key within Mozart's compositions may also evoke an atmosphere of grand tragedy, one example being the stormy G minor middle section to the otherwise serene B♭ major slow movement in the Piano Concerto No. 20.
