In order to determine the fastest dirt bike in the world, you need to consider that there are different types of bikes with different kinds of engine and power output. The fastest 250cc dirt bikes are the Kawasaki XK 250 and the Yamaha WR250F, both have a top acceleration of 85 mph and similar features. The most powerful 450cc bike is the KTM 450 SX-F with a speed of 123 mph.

What Makes a Dirt Bike Fast?

When you’re thinking about speed, it’s important to understand how the engine and power output work. Dirt bikes have either a 4-stroke or a 2-stroke engine. 2-strokes take two motions to complete a cycle, compression and combustion, while 4-stroke engines have four functions: exhaust, combustion, compression and intake. A bike with a 2-stroke engine will be more powerful straight off the mark, but a 4-stroke bike despite being heavier, will be able to maintain more power over a longer ride. A 4-stroke 250cc engine has a top speed of around 80mph, while a 2-stroke has a maximum speed of about 85mph. 2-strokes can generate power quicker than 4-strokes which makes them ideal for getting started on a strong note in competitive races or for accelerating out of corners. 4-strokes are more efficient and provide long-lasting power and endurance. Ultimately the type of dirt bike you choose will be based on the kind of riding that you'll be doing. Other factors that affect the speed of your bike and riding include your weight and height, experience, quality of your bike and riding conditions. A heavier or taller rider may not be able to accelerate as quickly as a smaller rider; lighter and shorter riders have a better chance of winning speed records. The weight of the bike also plays a role in speed; heavier bikes with a 450cc engine can be slower than lighter bikes with the same engine capacity.

The Fastest Dirt Bikes in the World

Generally speaking, 250cc bikes can reach speeds of 60-80mph. One of the fastest 250cc dirt bikes on the market is the Yamaha WR250F which allows you to switch between racing and standard modes to reach a top speed of 85mph. This super fast dirt bike has a liquid-cooled 4-valve, 4-stroke, DOHC fuel injection engine with 250cc displacement and approximately 30HP. It has a wet weight of 254 lbs and is perfect for off-road and cross-country riding. 450cc dirt bikes are great for recreational and enduro riding and can reach speeds of 80-120mph. One of the speediest 450cc dirt bikes is the Yamaha YZ450F which runs on a fuel-injected, 4-stroke, 4-valve, liquid-cooled DOHC engine and has a 5-speed gearbox with a multi-plate wet clutch. Now in its seventh generation, the YZ450 continues to go faster with more agility and power. The most powerful and fastest dirt bike currently, is the KTM 450 SX-F, a 450cc bike with a top speed of 123 mph. The 450 SX-F was a Motocross Champion under rider Ryan Dungey in the dirt bike category. A 449cc engine powers the bike which weighs just 237 pounds. What does KTM stand for?

Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen With a name like KTM, which stands for Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen, it's not surprising that the company likes to rely on initials for model naming.

In this week’s first segment, Senior Editor Nic de Sena take a look at the Ducati DesertX ADV bike. Powered by the same liquid-cooled V-twin motor as several other models in the Ducati range, the DesertX is another entry into the upper-middleweight class of ADV machines. The big question of course, is can the DesertX make its mark and differentiate itself from a growing field of competitors?

The second segment is the premiere of our new series of ‘Owner Reviews’. These are real-world opinions of machines owned by everyman riders. For this first one, I chat with my friend Dale Wagler. Dale is a former Marine and hard-core street- and dirt-bike rider. Dale recently acquired a new BMW 1250 GS Adventure, and he gives us his thoughts on the bike’s positives—and a few negatives too. If you’d like to be considered for a future Owner Reviews segment on an episode of Motos & Friends, please email us at [email protected] and tell us briefly about your bike. We’d love to hear from you! So, from all of us here at Motos & Friends… we hope you enjoy this episode!
