It’s best to introduce the concept to them through experience first before showing them what they’re actually clapping or tapping. Other ways to encourage rhythm during the lesson involve students drawing up their own on a sheet of paper or on a whiteboard. Even playing games that involve walking around the room or jumping up and down to the desired rhythm is really beneficial. For 5 year old’s especially, it’s important to incorporate rhythms early so that they are prepared for more difficult repertoire later in their studies.
