All About Basswood

All About Basswood

As you may have noticed, a great many of our shutters are made from basswood. In fact, basswood is our number one selling hardwood for plantation shutters—and for good reason. Basswood, when used for plantation shutters, carries a wide range of benefits, and overall it lends itself to making high quality shutters for your home. Here is a look at some of the top benefits that basswood has to offer.

It’s beautiful

Basswood has a very straight and uniform texture, and when you work with it, you’ll notice that the grain is light and stable. You can always choose to stain basswood rather than paint it because basswood exhibits a uniform, consistent color throughout. Overall, this makes any window treatment made from basswood a beautiful addition to your home.

It stains well

Because basswood exhibits a uniform texture and beautiful grain, staining it only amplifies its rich, natural wood look. Staining basswood brings out the natural wood grain, and due to its unique composition, basswood happens to take stain very well. Basswood can also be painted just about any color with very little trouble.

It’s warp resistant

Many assume that shutters made from real wood are heavier than those made from wood composites, but that actually isn’t the case. Basswood is very light, and therefore it won’t warp or twist when exposed to the normal moisture that is in the air.

It’s lightweight, yet strong

Because basswood is very light, it makes for conveniently lightweight window treatments. When you opt for plantation shutters made from basswood, you know that you can be safe even when investing in shutters for the larger windows in your home. And don’t let the word “lightweight” fool you; basswood is also very strong and durable, meaning that your basswood plantation shutters will last you for years to come.

It’s not a porous wood

What makes a non-porous wood an especially great wood to work with when making plantation shutters? Non-porous woods are easier to work with because adhesives cling to them very well, allowing you to get strong, tight joins where you need them.

It’s a renewable resource

Did you know that in the United States we grow almost twice as much basswood as we harvest each year? Basswood happens to be relatively easy to grow and harvest, meaning that it is a renewable resource. When you opt for plantation shutters made from basswood, you can rest assured that your interior design decisions aren’t causing harm to the environment.

Does basswood need to be sealed?

Some woods are very absorbent. Basswood is one of those woods. Because of its absorbency, it should be sealed before staining. If you don't seal it, don't be surprised if some parts of the carving absorb more stain than other parts, resulting in a blotchy appearance.

Some woods are very absorbent. Basswood is one of those woods. Because of its absorbency, it should be sealed before staining. If you don’t seal it, don’t be surprised if some parts of the carving absorb more stain than other parts, resulting in a blotchy appearance. In Why Seal Wood Before Staining I recommend shellac as a sealer. You have other alternatives to shellac. You could use a wood conditioner, such as Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. Be aware that wood conditioners are not the same thing as a sanding sealers. Only use a sanding sealer if you are not staining the wood but just coating the substrate with a clean finish, such as varnish. Another option is to seal the wood with thinned polyurethane varnish. I have recently used this mixture on two carvings with great success. Here’s what I did.
