QUOTE(flutesaxpiano @ Nov 7 2010, 03:07 PM)

Hi,

Im actualy a student but I was unsure what topic to post this in. Ive been playing piano for about a year. Previously to this I couldnt play anything but chopsticks and the opening bars to fur elise. Anyway, I started lessons properly and was told I should do an exam. I ended up being told to do grade 5, and my exam is tomorrow!!! I am really nervous, and always practice hard. (About 2-3 hours a night) but im terrified of failing. My sight reading is predicted to get 0. I play the piece but the notes are simply not there. My scales are all perfect, pieces are up to scratch and aural is fine. Although, im grade 7 flute and have not once failed an exam. What happens if I fail? (im asking this because a lot of my practice time was disrupted due to the death of my father last month ) My teacher says I will pass but what happens If it all goes to pot?!

Any replies will be greatly apprieciated!

Chris

Hi Chris,First of all, please accept my condolences on the death of your father. That must be hard for you.I don't think you will get 0 for your sight-reading - you only get 0 if "no work is offered" ie. you do not attempt the task at all.You sound to me like everything is in place apart from the sight reading - so do not let that spoil the rest of the exam by worrying about it. You may be nervous and make slips and obviously you have a lot of emotional stress on you at the moment. Just try your best and try to think positively about the things you can do.You ask what happens if you fail? If you fail, you fail the exam and you will not receive a certificate but you will receive a mark sheet from which you can learn what went wrong. If you fail, you pick yourself up again and carry on learning and improving. Then you can decide whether you want to sit the exam again or not.I don't know how old you are Chris, but when I was a teenager up to my mid 20s I thought any kind of disappointment or anything that wasn't 100% successful was a disaster. I'm older now (34) and I know how to pick myself up and move on. It's hard but doable. So worst case scenario, you go in tomorrow and mess it up and aren't successful. What happens next? You learn from it and move on.However, having said that, I really think that you sound well-prepared with one area that you are concerned about, so go in confidently determined to do well in all the other things. Start with your scales and maybe leave the sight-reading to the end and under NO circumstances think about the sight-reading at all until you actually have to do it.Best of luck tomorrow.
