The Love Island cast are allowed to use a mobile in the villa, but there aren't like normal phones and strangely all have a different time set on them The stars of Love Island are completely separated from the outside world - but they can have a phone. Unlike most other reality TV shows, the Islanders are given a mobile so they can communicate with each other and the producers. However, there are obviously strict rules in place to make sure the singletons can't get any information from back home or the internet. Having stayed loyal to Samsung Galaxy devices since 2018, bosses made a change this year by giving them a Goggle Pixel pro. The Islanders are able to send secret texts to one another and take lots of selfies, but a lot of the functions of a normal phone have been removed. Here is a look at all the phone rules - and the secrets we don't see on-screen such as what happens to the pics and all the annoying tech issues.

Modified phones

Get the news you want straight to your inbox. Sign up for a Mirror newsletter here . Once the Islanders are on the plane, they are forced to give over their actual phone to show bosses. This means they aren't able to communicate with the outside world for days and possibly weeks before entering the villa. So imagine the ridiculous amount of texts and notifications they must come back to once they turn their phone on again. Amy Hart, who was in the fifth series, has explained in great detail what happens with the phones on her TikTok page. She explained: "You get picked up by a chaperone. Then when you get on the plane, as the plane takes off you send your last text and give your phone over. "You don't get it back until you get into the car to go to the airport on the way home. So mine was two days after I left the villa." These aren't standard phones, as internet access is disabled on the devices so the Islanders can't read any headlines or social media reaction about themselves. The villa-issued phones also only allow texts to be sent between each other and to be received from production staff - and during Casa Amor they can't send messages to the other villa. They can be told to get ready for a date, go outside for a challenge, prepare for a recoupling or be warned that someone will be dumped soon.

There are no clocks in the villa because bosses don't want the cast to know what the time is - but how do they stop them checking it on their phones?

Amy added: "All they had on there was your picture as the background and then you could take photos and send each other messages. "I think they had a time on them but they were all different so none of them were right."

Producers warning

In the real world, it's easy to get distracted then come back to a million messages and missed calls on your phone. But weirdly this doesn't seem to happen on Love Island, as the contestants are always right next to their mobiles when they get a text. Winter Love Island stars Shaughna Phillips admitted that producers would give out phones just before a text pops through. "Sometimes [producers] walk past you and drop your phone you're like 'here we go,'" she told Closer. "You start prepping, sucking in everything, because you know it's going to be it's you." On TikTok, she told the Made In Chelsea star that saying "I've got a text" was "just the done thing" rather than something that's forced. Sam then asked: "Do you know that you're about to get a text because they've all got phones in their hands? They're not just holding them all day." A grinning Zara responded: "Well I think you just answered the question," to which Sam replied: "So you do get told? Do they go, 'Guys, sit on that bed, you're going to get a text?'" Zara clarified: "No, but they would be like, 'Maybe you should all have your phones near you'."

So those stunned reactions might not be as truthful as you think.

Secret texts

The Islanders are constantly sending secret messages to each other when they wanted to keep their chat a bit private. "We deleted our messages but the producers told me that they still have them all." But most of the time it's just to have a bit of fun or confess your love to another Islander, which was certainly the case for Kem Cetinay and Chris Hughes. The series 3 stars would send soppy notes to each other like "I love you so much baby" and "Nap later? me and you".

Tech issues

We've all had tech issues with our phones, whether that be smashing the screen or struggling to get a signal. The same applies in the villa, as there can be severe delays in messages actually coming through to the Islanders. Series two star Kady McDermott explained: "We had loads of problems with our phones that year. When we'd get a text and someone shouted 'text', it would take like five minutes for the message from producers to actually come through. "It was a nightmare because it took so long to load, and obviously you don't see that on the TV."

Deleted photos

While they're banned from using the wifi, the Islanders are encouraged to fill up their phone's camera roll so viewers at home can check in on them throughout the day. Many of the sweet snaps are uploaded to Love Island's various social media accounts - giving us a different view of the villa. But the Islanders don't get sent the pics when they leave and the phones are completely wiped for the next Islander. "Sadly you don't get to keep all the photos," explained Amy. "Some of them will be uploaded to the Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts so you can get them from there. "Everything gets wiped when you leave because your phone gets given to the next Islander who comes in sadly." During an interview this month, Anna Vakili, who was in the same series as Amy, also confirmed she didn't get to keep her snaps. However, winner Amber Gill said: "I actually got a lot of the photos that we took. Because I got my Samsung phone after I finished. "It was part of my, like I got loads of gifts as like a 'winner pack', and I got one of the phones. It had the pictures we took."
