How To Worship God At Home

Home is where you go to relax and unwind after a stressful day. It's where we spend time with our loved ones, laughing and making memories. It's where you show off your extensive collection of beanie babies or 49ers memorabilia. For most people, home is a sacred space. It may not be a church or a chapel, but this place of safety and security could be the perfect space for you to get your worship on. It's not uncommon for us to separate church life and home life. But there are no rules that say we can't glorify God in the comfort of our own home. When you bring God along for the ride in your daily life, you'll reap incredible benefits. Not sure how to get started? Here are some tips on bringing God into your home and making worship a common practice for your family. God loves worship. He loves our prayers. But you're wrong if you think that worship is doing Him any favors — He is already full and complete. Worship allows us to experience God's presence and His peace. Here are just a few of the reasons not to limit your worship to Sundays at church.

Worship Connects Us to God

Worship is like connecting a power cord to the socket. The vacuum isn't going to run unless you plug it in. We won't feel God's presence and power unless we plug our hearts into the source.

Changes the Atmosphere

Had a bad day? Did you and your spouse fight? Are you in hot water at work? Trouble and difficulties breed a negative atmosphere that we can feel. Worship can completely change the atmosphere, bringing God's comfort, love, and light. Instead of dwelling in the dumps, let worship lift your spirits.

Brings Your Family Together

We live in a fast-paced world where everyone has a million responsibilities on their plate. Even your fourth grader has to work family time into her schedule. Worship is a great way to slow down and center your family around what's important. Plus, it teaches your children the value of glorifying God in all they do.

Some Pro Tips on How to Worship God at Home

Spending time in God's presence is addictive. The more we do it, the more we enjoy doing it. The first step is just to start. Worship is not just reciting a bunch of "Our Father's" or singing some hymns (although there's nothing wrong with that). Worship is showing God you love Him. It's an act of intentionality. While it doesn't have to be formal, it should be heartfelt. Here are just a few of the ways you can start worshiping God at home.

Music

When you think about worship, your mind probably jumps to organ music or a trendy worship band or a hundred person chorus singing "Hallelujah." Worshiping God through song is an incredible avenue that directly links us to God's heart. There are more than 100 verses in the book of Psalms that talk about singing and music. Obviously, God is trying to give us a big hint.

Prayer and Thanksgiving

Forget boring prayers that you memorized at Sunday school when you were a kid. Praying to God and thanking Him can be powerful and dynamic. Dwell on His goodness to you and your family. Thank Him for everything He has given you. Ask Him for help with any troubles you're facing. He promises to be our faithful friend and advocate.

God's Word

Too often, Bible reading is either a boring chore or something we skip altogether. Find ways to make God's word active and living, because that's what it is! Read some of your favorite verses out loud. Or write them out on Post-It notes and put them all around your house to remind you of His promises.

Any Time's a Good Time

A monk named Brother Lawrence, who lived nearly 400 years ago, discovered a crazy cool secret. His job was washing dishes at the monastery. Unlike the other monks who transcribed scripture or prayed for the people, he probably had the least glamorous job. Yet while washing dishes and doing other mundane tasks, he found that he could lift his heart towards God and find His gentle love. If all else fails, you can turn even your household chores into an act of worship.
