Important: Please note that Moore Piano only provides player piano conversion services to customers located in northeast Indiana and the surrounding area (southern Michigan & northwestern Ohio). If you are not located in one of these areas, please do not contact us about player piano conversion services. Moore Piano is proud to be Ft. Wayne’s only dealer for QRS Music Technologies, which is a leading manufacturer of player piano conversion technology. This technology allows piano owners to turn their acoustic grand or upright pianos into player pianos and access music libraries consisting of thousands of classic songs. Converting an acoustic piano into a player piano can be done for less than half the cost of purchasing a new player piano while still getting all the benefits. It can be done without decreasing the value of the piano and in fact can help a piano hold its value longer.

The QRS PNOmation Player System

The technology developed by QRS which Moore Piano uses for our player piano conversion services is called PNOmation. While there are many player piano conversion systems on the market, PNOmation is the only one that, since its inception, has always offered a way for users to upgrade to newer technology as it becomes available.

Some of the main benefits of this system include:

A music library consisting of over 12,000 songs from every genre

All music is wireless – content is stored on the piano, not the cloud or your device

Unit includes a speaker for songs that have full accompaniment

Accessible with included remote, phone, tablet, Apple Watch and Alexa

Both Wifi and Blue Tooth accessible, can be connected to wireless speakers

Can be used in conjunction with the PNOscan optical recording technology

The QRS PNOmation system uses superior materials that can handle the various climates and conditions while being played over a long period of time, including: Fully encased solenoids with Teflon impregnated solenoid plungers, which deliver much more accurate control over the range of motion

A lost motion cap on the bottom which insures proper throw

A longer plunger and solenoid, which delivers more accurately the dynamic called out for in the music

In addition to converting acoustic pianos to player pianos, QRS can also convert existing player pianos to wireless technology with the PNOmation upgrade. With the upgrade, a player piano will be able to be accessed with any wireless-enabled device such as your phone, tablet, Alexa, or Apple Watch. This upgrade is available for Piano Disk and Disklavier (Yamaha) player pianos. The video below demonstrates some of the capability of a wireless-enabled player piano.

QRS PNOmation OT

If a full conversion from an acoustic piano to a player piano is not in your budget, another option is the PNOmation OT. This is simply a unit that sits over your piano’s keyboard and gives it the functionality of a player piano. It is fully wi-fi enabled so you can control it from your phone, tablet, or other wireless device. No installation is necessary since it simply sits over your piano’s keyboard.

QRS PNOScan

The QRS PNOScan is a system that turns an acoustic piano into a MIDI recording device. MIDI is a protocol that allows electronic instruments, computers, and audio devices to communicate with each other. In essence, PNOScan gives an acoustic piano recording capabilities that would ordinarily only be available with an electronic keyboard. Its optical recording technology records key presses on the piano, so there is no maintenance-intensive mechanical component like other recording devices use.

Key features include:

An optional stop-rail for silent practice

Headphone jack for silent practice

Syncs with Piano Marvel for online lessons

About the QRS Company

The QRS company is over a century old and was responsible for the development of the player piano as we know it today. In the heyday of player pianos in the 1920s, they sold up to 10 million rolls a year to the player piano market, and today they are the only supplier of those rolls in the world. However, starting in 1986, their focus shifted to the development of digital player piano retrofit technology, which they introduced under the Pianomation™ name.

Most grand or upright pianos can be converted into a player piano. There are some pianos that can’t be converted due to the fact that they can’t accept the cutout of the keyboard that needs to occur. Most of these are older models of pianos from manufacturers that are no longer in business.

Do I need to bring my piano into your shop, or can this service be done in my home?

The piano will need to be brought into the shop, because the conversion process involves cutting into the piano which can create sawdust and get a little messy. We can come pick up the piano from your house and bring it to our shop, and return it when the process is complete.

How long does it take to convert a regular piano into a player piano?

The process can be completed within a few days.

Does converting a regular piano to a player piano make it worth more?

In some cases, yes. Pianos decrease in value over time, so turning a piano into a player piano makes it hold its value longer. It certainly doesn’t make a piano worth any less.

Why would I want to convert a piano to a player piano in the first place?

Having a player piano gives people the ability to have live piano music in their home without the need for a live piano player. Whether it’s adding atmosphere to a party or gathering, or just simply helping people relax after a long day at work, many people find live piano music more enjoyable than listening to recorded music.

How much does it cost to convert a regular piano to a player piano?

A full conversion of an acoustic piano to a player piano usually costs between $6,000–$7,000. If you already have a player piano and just want to get the PNOmation upgrade to give it wireless capability, then that is about $2,800.
