What is CBT Training?

Compulsory Basic Training. A course designed for those who want to ride a moped under 50cc with maximum design speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per hour or a motorcycle under 125cc, and it is also the first step to attain a full UK motorcycle licence.

How long will my CBT certificate be valid?

The certificate is valid for two years, in which time you will need to pass your full test or take CBT again.

What previous experience do I need to pass my CBT training?

You do not need previous experience, however, you must hold a provisional driving licence before you can ride a motorcycle. To ride on public roads, you must hold a provisional licence first and then complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT). The CBT isn’t a test, a test pass is generally considered by most candidates where they complete the course and receive their certificate on the same day.

Do I need a provisional driving licence to learn to ride?

Yes, you need to apply for a UK provisional driving licence. To ride on public roads, you must have a provisional licence first and then complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course. To apply for the UK provisional drivers’ licence, click here.

What motorbike can I ride once I’ve completed my CBT training?

Once you have completed the CBT course you can ride a 50cc moped, or if you are 17 years old or over, with category A on your provisional licence, you can ride a learner legal motorcycle up to 125cc.

Can I ride a moped with only a full driving licence?

The answer is yes and no, this depends on when you passed your driving test. If you passed your driving test before 1 February 2001 you can legally ride a moped (up to 50cc) with no L plates, without taking a CBT course or the full moped test.

Can I ride a 125cc without doing a CBT course – I have a full UK driver’s license?

Yes, if you have a full car licence you can ride a 125cc scooter or motorbike off-road. However, you must take and pass your compulsory basic training (CBT) before riding on the road.

What can I ride with a full A2 licence?

With a full A2 licence, you can ride a bike that produces no more than 35 kW or 47bhp (these are normally advertised as A2 bikes in dealer showrooms). You can also ride without L-plates and carry a pillion passenger.

Do I need to take a motorbike theory test if I have a full UK driver’s licence?

Yes, you must pass a motorcycle theory test before taking the motorcycle practical test, whether you have a full driving licence or not.

What can I ride with a full A1 licence?

An A1 licence allows riders aged 17 and over to: ride a light motorcycle up to 11 kW (and a power to weight ratio not more than 0.1kW per kg and 125 cc (rough top speed of 60mph). Also ride without L-plates.

What is the process for getting a motorcycle license in the UK?

The process for getting a motorcycle licence in the UK: firstly, you need to get a provisional licence and then complete compulsory basic training ( CBT ) to get a certificate. You must pass both parts of your practical test within 2 years of taking the theory test. If you do not, you’ll have to start the process again.

Can I ride a motorbike without L-plates as soon as I have passed my practical tests?

Once you’ve passed your practical test, you will have a licence to ride any machine of up to 125cc, so long as it’s power is restricted to 11kW, without L-plates and you may carry a pillion passenger.
