When can you call yourself a pianist? Can you call yourself a pianist if you have been playing for 2 years, or only if you play professionally?

Do you guys on AB forum call youself a pianist, or just someone who plays the piano? smile

You can call yourself whatever you wish. People are often asked what they should be called. Coworker don't call themselves doctor, but Fred or Mary as the case may be. You can call yourself a pianist or a piano player. But it doesn't say anything about you. Even people who don't "play" the piano, know where middle C is. There are millions of people who say they can do something but in reality, some of those people are over stating their ability. Lots of people say they are honest, but people can know and live with people a lifetime and are still learning what honesty means to their loved ones. I guess the best thing is to sit down at a piano, and your playing will speak for itself and others will call you what they think you should be called. The most difficult question to answer is how long you have been playing. I just started dating the pieces I am playing - start date and the date I am able to play it smoothly. I have just finishing playing a piece of 20 measures and it took me 5 days to be able to play it smoothly. Most days it only takes me a couple of days to play it smoothly - but this pieces was difficult for my brain. It really hurts sometimes when you realize how slow it can be. I love playing the piano and each piece is an unknown in everyway.
