Introduction: myths and false beliefs

For many decades now, adults falsely believe that children learn music much faster than them. This idea has stopped many adults from pursuing a beautiful passion, such as playing the piano. Adult beginners are often fearful of getting started because they do not want to make a fool of themselves. It is a proven fact that adult learners tend to be very goal-oriented. So the moral of the story is, that you can absolutely learn and develop the piano as an adult beginner without fear of failure! As an adult beginner you can simply push yourself so much harder than a child can. You can spend more time, focus deeper and analyse quicker than children can on aggregate. The truth is that children usually play the piano for many years, before someone listens to them play. Everyone then simply assumes that they learn quickly when in actual fact they have been playing for many years. It is therefore vital to have all the statistics before we make judgements that negatively affects the adult piano learning community.

The truth is: you are talented

You have unlimited talent. You could not exhaust all your potential and ability, even if you lived 500 lifetimes! The truth is we all have an amazing brainpower. Our brain has over 20 billion cells and each cell is connected to other cells. We possess a miracle within! You are basically only using a limited amount of your talent on a daily basis. And that is exactly why you can go so much further than you can imagine when learning how to play the piano as an adult beginner. The problem will never lie with your talent, but rather with your practice habits. We always advise at least 15 minutes a day for adult beginner piano students.

Why it is never too late to start learning the piano

Whether you learn how to play the piano at the age of five or 50 makes no difference, as you will have to go through the same learning process. The truth is that it is never, simply never too late to start learning the piano. To give you an example: Wes Montgomery, considered to be one of the finest jazz guitar player ever, only picked up the guitar at the age of 20. (Remember – he became one of the BEST in the entire world!)

To achieve his goals, Wes Montgomery practised six hours day while working eight to nine hour shifts. (Relentless dedication!) Of course, you do not need to do exactly the same, but it goes to show that you do not need to be a child to learn how to play to a very high proficient standard. So it is never too late for you to start playing the piano. The most important part of learning is great education and by learning how to play the piano with a top-notch instructor, you will benefit from outstanding piano lessons right from the very beginning.

What to expect in your first lesson

In your first piano lesson as an absolute beginner, you will start by learning the music stave. You will learn the treble and bass clef and get to know where the notes are located on the piano’s keyboard. You will also learn about timing. You will learn how to play semi-breves, minims and crotchets. You will also start out learning simple tunes that will help you learn to memorise the notes. Most of all, you will be encouraged by us and we will always make you feel right at home!

The time you will need to dedicated to practising the piano

We understand that you have a busy work schedule.

In addition to being busy at work, you also have a busy social life. The truth is that the more you practice the better you will become. We will always encouraged you to practice as much as possible. For a bare minimum we recommend spending at least 15 minutes per day, five times a week at the piano as a beginner. If you are able to spend 20 to 30 minutes a day, your progress will be much faster. Your piano development largely depends upon the time and effort you put into it along with the quality of tuition that you will receive. Practising the piano is essential when learning how to play the piano. There is simply no other way around it.
