What is a Restricted Keyway Lock?

A restricted keyway lock is designed to prevent unauthorized duplication of keys. Most of these locks utilize a key that is controlled by one specific locksmith and also requires you to be on a signature card in order to have keys copied. Keys can only be copied by us with proper identification and a signature controlled logging system. This also prevents many companies from rekeying their locks every time an employee leaves. As long as the key is returned, you know there are no copies and your building remains secure.

How does it work?

We set up a system specifically designed for you. We install a special cylinder in your locks that only accept the restricted keys that can only be cut by us. We key all the cylinders and can even set them up on a master key system if needed. Once your locks are keyed we will cut the number of keys you request, number each one and then log them in our records. At any time you can request the number of keys you have out in your system. You hand the keys out to your employees and require them to return them upon leaving the company. (Generally most companies hold the employees’ last check until the key is returned.) If the key is not returned a rekey may be required. If you need keys copied you either call us out or stop in our shop to have them made. We will require ID and your signature to match the signature on your signature card. When we cut you more keys we number each one and log them in our system. The new keys get numbers starting at the last numbered keys you had made.

What are High Security Locks & Keys?

There are many different type of high security locks on the market that utilize different technology to secure a cylinder. Methods such as special sidebars, pick resistant pins and electronic cylinders are used to provide additional security. Most high security locks also incorporate restricted keys and special keyways to greatly reduce the number of places that can copy a key. High security locks can be incorporated into most lock hardware. Some locks may need to be replaced and some may just need new cylinders. We will provide new cylinders and locks to maximize security and minimize costs. We can install high security locks into padlocks, deadbolts, levers, knobs, commercial aluminum style door locks and many other places.

Do Not Duplicate

The words “Do Not Duplicate” stamped on your key means very little. Many places will duplicate a key that states “do not duplicate”. If you do request a key that says do not duplicate, how do you get copies of the keys made when the time comes that you need more keys? We do not duplicate keys that say “do not duplicate” without written authorization from the building owner or manager, but many places will do it without question. If you do not want your keys duplicated there are ways to control who has keys and who can get them duplicated. If this is something that interests you, look into our – HIGH SECURITY KEYS AND RESTRICTED KEYWAYS.

Are Steinway piano keys ivory?

A traditional keyboard consists of 52 flat white keys and 36 raised black keys; on a Steinway piano all these keys are made of Bavarian spruce. For the white keys, a polymer laminate covers the spruce, imitating the look and feel of ivory, which until the mid - 20th century was commonly used for these keys.

A recent concert at the Auckland Town Hall prompted a query from an audience member – what are the keys of the venue’s Steinway grand piano made of?

A traditional keyboard consists of 52 flat white keys and 36 raised black keys; on a Steinway piano all these keys are made of Bavarian spruce. For the white keys, a polymer laminate covers the spruce, imitating the look and feel of ivory, which until the mid - 20th century was commonly used for these keys. Since a ban on the international trade in African elephant ivory and the realisation that plastic keys are more economical, very few piano keys made today are ivory. (While rare, ivory key tops are still available as long as there’s documentation to prove the ivory has not been illegally obtained.) The raised black sharp key tops on vintage Steinways (and other pianos) were once almost always made of ebony. A hard, dense and naturally dark wood, ebony provided a beautiful contrast to the gleaming white ivory. Due to rarity and cost, these keys on new pianos are now generally made of high-grade plastics or other woods.
