Are old keyboards worth anything?

Usually, someone will pay anywhere from $40-$80 for a used mechanical keyboard that's in good, working order (note that most rubber-dome keyboards aren't worth your time selling). Put up an ad on Craigslist, Reddit, or eBay and you'll be sure to get offers.

Let’s say you’ve finally decided to get a mechanical keyboard to replace your standard one, or your want to swap out your current mechanical to a newer model.

What are you supposed to do with your old keyboard?

Yes, you could throw it in the trash, but that’s neither good for the environment nor a smart decision depending on the type of keyboard you’re getting rid of. Below are a few examples of what you could do with your old keyboard, and which options are best depending on what type of keyboard you have and the condition it’s in.

Gift It

If you have either a rubber-dome or mechanical keyboard that’s in working order, why throw it away?

Instead, consider gifting it to a friend or family member who needs a new device. This option is a great way to take the keyboard off your hands that doesn’t require you to do much work.

Whoever receives the peripheral will also appreciate the gesture!

Sell It

Some keyboards are worth a solid chunk of money even after they’ve been used for a while. These types of keyboards are worth putting the effort into selling. Usually, someone will pay anywhere from $40-$80 for a used mechanical keyboard that’s in good, working order (note that most rubber-dome keyboards aren’t worth your time selling). Put up an ad on Craigslist, Reddit, or eBay and you’ll be sure to get offers.

Donate It

So maybe your keyboard’s not worth gifting to friends or family, or isn’t something you think people would pay a lot of money for. For example, your used rubber-dome keyboard is a prime candidate for donating. It won’t be worth the time you invest in listing it for sale, and if you don’t think your relatives would even use such a device, it’s best to donate. Drop off your keyboard at your local Goodwill or second-hand store. Don’t forget your donation receipt for tax purposes!

Re-purpose It

Do you or someone you know have a crafty, creative side?

If so, consider re-purposing the keyboard or its parts for fun creations. For example, you could add magnets to the keys to spell out words on your fridge, or you could use them to border a picture frame. Got a rubber-dome keyboard? Consider making a wallet out of the circuitry board!

Recycle It

Last but not least, if you don’t feel like doing any of the above, make sure you recycle your keyboard properly. There’s plenty of ways to e-cycle computer equipment. This is better for the environment, because there are lots of computer parts that should not be dumped in a landfill because they are harmful to humans, plant life, or animals. This post covers some places you can go online to find local e-cycling events. Simply drop off your keyboard, and leave with the peace of mind that it’s being recycled properly. There’s really no reason to get rid of your old keyboard by throwing it in the trash. With all the options above, you should be able to choose the best way to get rid of your device that’s both easy on you and helpful to the environment or those around you.
